A little gem I found - inexpensive electronics..

My Capri 25 had a knotmeter, and I purchased a cheap depth sounder for it... I came to LOVE having those features.

Sailed on a buddies S2 over the summer, and they had an analog wind gauge (that which I am thinking was pretty old)... I poo-pooed it a lot when we sailed together, but then I found that knowing wind speed and apparent wind direction without having to break my neck to look all the way up was a good thing. NO I won't stop doing that, because I am obsessed with mainsail trim...

Flash forward my new to me 32 year old S2 had all busted electronics (from sitting outside for 8 years with no use).
I thought I could repair the "speed/depth" but alas it was a "Standard Horizon" product that is no longer made (for 10 years). No support and frankly wasn't worth having a 3rd party work on it.

So my "scheme" was to get Wind/Speed/Depth. I like Raymarine, but the cheap i50/i60 package is like $1350! It's not even full digital!
Simrad had the is40 which was all-in-one on 1 gauge, but showing all the data in 1 place means a crammed display I KNOW I'd want 2 displays before long. Price $1350.
Raymarine has the i70 product which is sweet, but is ALL DIGITAL, requires analog to digital converters for the transducers, and its also a single display like above, and runs about $1500, or $1350 on sale.
Then the Tacktick stuff which is really just Raymarine now, is all in the $2000 range but wireless. Forget about Nexxus or Garmin.
Raymarine makes the i40 stuff, but the displays are all LCD... that is fine for speed and depth, but wind? I dunno how I feel about that. That is pretty inexpensive, and I think came in around $1200 all in.

Then I found the perfect product... it's analog, has a nice analog wind indicator, but LCD displays (not color, so should be easy on power), and a very simple network, that is easy to make NMEA 2000 compatible (the new standard for most electronics)... it was the IS20 Combi/Wind... Guess what? They discontinued it! Price point from Simrad was $1100.

So I started a search through ebay and such to find someone who had an overstock and found this place (others said they had it and didn't):

The bigger storefront is: http://factoryoutletstore.com

Anyway, analog wind, simple wiring, all in a box (transducers, wires, backbone, gauges)... for $999 shipped. Not horrible. I was worried as everyone else "claimed" to have it in stock, but they were all backordered (keep in mind it's discontinued)...

I ordered it 12/12, it came yesterday 12/16, order still showed "processing" when it arrived. OK.

I have no idea how it works and likely won't until Spring... I'll test the paddlewheel of course, but the price is right... But I thought I'd share if you are of the mind to get a gift for yourself/boat this Christmas.
Enjoy the wet box picture.

Sorry I'm excited, this is the most electronics I've ever had for a boat, and they will all talk to one another.

I should add that I am now intending on getting a tiller pilot from simrad. I liked my Raymarine ST1000+, however, the TP22 is a larger model than the 1000+, but more importantly it plugs RIGHT IN to simnet, so I can setup "steer by wind."

My other big purchase that I hope Santa brings... is a new VHF.. if not I'll scrape my pennies together to do it. The VHF I want has DSC and GPS built in... which if I do it right, will talk on the simnet bus... I may need a NMEA to 0183 converter because my preferred VHF right now is the
Standard Horizon Explorer GPS. My only gripe with it is it does not do NMEA 2000, just 0183...

I have to admit though this SIMRAD while is not as "pretty" looks to do everything the Standard Horizon does, and HAS NMEA 2000 already...

I know what you are thinking, that's a lot of electronics for a little boat on an inland lake. I agree, and it's probably overkill for that. However if I should ever want to drag the boat to bigger water, having all this gives me extra piece of mind. The VHF with DSC and GPS, is a level of safety that isn't terribly more expensive than a VHF without... maybe $100? Seems like money well spent to me. If I could also get AIS for another $100 I'd consider that as well.

Nice finds! I've always fancied a set-up like this, but put off by the cost. Unfortunately, with the CDN$ tanking and the tax ding ordering this cross-border would entail, I can't take advantage of your find... ah well, another time.
