A little bit of sewing help needed

When I worked there, we did car upholstery, replace Jeep plastic windows (very often) repaired luggage, a LOT of sport equipment, skate and knife sharpening, zipper repair or replacement on anything needed, custom jobs, canvas repair of any kind and a few shoes.
If you are lucky to find a good one, you will be happily surprised.
As I mentioned above, with more pictures, we can find the best solution, and you might be able to do it yourself depending on what you have on hand
I have a fantastic dry cleaner that I sometimes bring my canvas to (it comes out looking like new with no damage). The son handles the dry cleaning while the mother does the sewing. She does amazing work but wow does she complain about synthetic materials and thread!

I took a pic of the front and back of the area in question. What other pics would be useful?

Ok, I just looked at the 2 pictures again
Is the cover that narrow or is it the angle of the picture?
You could always add a flap to the top and fold it back to make a channel for the lace to go through, I am pretty sure your machine could handle that

The part in the picture wraps around the mast to keep rain out. A strap would be perfect for this application if they didn't get so nasty sitting outside.

I'm going to try making a channel of sorts. If my machine can't handle it, I'll use Foswick's idea.

I'm only a sail away ;) If you were closer I'd happily toss some work your way. I didn't forget about that bimini/dodger connector piece we briefly discussed. I got busy and I need to adjust the frames

Maybe Rich , but the one possibility that I would avoid is Velcro. The sun kills it.
If using webbing, I would go for a simple "buckle clip."
There are two kinds of velcro. Nylon and polyester. The polyester is much more resistant to UV and it holds up much better than the nylon variety. That said, it is likely to need replacement at some point depending upon wear and tear.

Thanks for this info. I never knew there where different materials used to make velcro
