...enough to get one of the YC cruise trophies. Of course, it helped that I was retired last year. Good thing I had the boat or I'd be whining about the market. Still, I'd like to do more. Finally got the sail shape squared away and the single-line reefing sorted out. Spent a lot more time fixing and servicing heads than I ever want to. Boat treated us right; the least I can do is return the favor. Happy holidays and a great 2003 to everyone. Rick D.

GPS Tracks

Retired several years ago, got my Captain's license and started a small charter business. This yr. business was off, due to 9-11, I most certainly believe, but at the end of the season, checked the tracking screen on my Garmin GPS. Wow, didn't know I made so many North/South trips. Looked like a 2 yr old's scribbling back and forth, back and forth. But still didn't get out enough to satisfy my sailing appetite. Hope ya all have a great Holiday season, and I and "Scotch and Water" will see ya all next yr. Regards Capt T.

Not a good year

Not a good year this one. I didn't even put it in the water. I was supposed to leave town in August so there was no sense putting it in for a couple of months and having my wife look after all the haulout problems. It did give me a chance to do a lot of the work I was putting off. I won't be home until April. That will give me about 3 weeks to get everything ready and do the final touches to what needs doing. Next summer will be non stop. I plan to sail either to Newfoundland or down the East coast. Either way there will be a lot of miles put on her.

106 days sailing

with 167 crew, spanning 1,533 miles of the York River and Chesapeake Bay. These included two vacations to Deltaville, three weekends on the Mobjack Bay, sails with clients, and two months of sailing school for novices. On the last day, a hard gybe sheered off the back two bolts of my mast, but it held steady.

Look Out Next Year

Only got 26 days in this year, but did'nt acquire the boat until late August. Still sailing in December; Mississippi winters are usually mild. This week may be a bit cold. Hope to sail on New Years Day. Best to all, Hogan Cooper

Super season!

Great summer sailing! And for the first time ever we installed radar, GPS, autohelm with remote control, got our head working and our boat managed to stand straight completely out of water for one whole tide changeover (due to my getting just a tad too close to shore!) And this is our first time ever having our boat at home for the winter! Quite a nice site looking out the kitchen window! :) Ron

Best of 9 seasons with this boat

Had a great season (best since we've had this boat). Moved boat to Portland, Maine from Portsmouth, RI (200 nm) and spent 2 months sailing out of a marina there. Cruised weekends and a two-week trip "downeast". Cruised with a new club and made great friends. Became secretary of the club (see related link). Boat performed perfectly. Did close to 900 miles

A Good Year in the North Channel

Any time spent in the North Channel (Lake Huron)on a sailboat is wonderful. We were fortunate to spend over three weeks there this summer with friends in the Trailer/Sailor Assn. and with friends from the Dayton Power Squadron.

Never enough

This was my third season with Biloxi Blues, and I got out on her at least ten or twelve times, more this summer than any other time. During one week, I went out for three sails! I was able to do so because I installed roller furling and a tiller tamer, and was able to solo sail (for the first time!) comfortably. Of course, something needing maintenance always cuts into the short sailing season. Two years ago, my outboard crapped out and I lost a couple of weeks. This past summer, one of my winches broke, and I sailed without it for about a month and a half while I waited for replacement parts from England (winches are a bonus, not a necessity on a small boat). Of course, young children and a wife who have other interests also limit my ability to go out when I feel like it, but I am lucky that the Admiral also understands and supports my obsession. All in all, a good season.

Way too Infrequently!

This year was a new lo in not getting out often enough! I'm not using my H-34 the way it should be: weekend cruising with 2-3 people. I'm seriously thinking of going in one of two directions: something smaller/easier/saltier; or, a "pre-retirement" boat with a pilothouse. Ramsay Selden

never enough

I sail probably about 60 days a years with 10 weekends included. I have rigged my 50 footer so that I can sail it by myself if no onr else cares to go. each day on the water presents a different challenge or a different form of enjoyment and it never seems to be satisfy my desire to just go sailing.

At least we went sailing

I returned to sailing this year after being away from it for almost 25 years. I was a daily sailor as a kid/teenager and then as I got into my 20's I did passages as a crew member. My wife found a love for sailing a few years ago and we bit the bullet and moved some $$ from the stock market to a new-old boat. We got out an average of once a weekend, with a few nites thrown in. But the weather (lack of wind) conspired against us the two weekend overnites we had scheduled. (Really, if I'm gonna drive there, I might as well take the car) The kids like to sail a little, they mostly like to hang around and swim on the hook. I didn't really get to see what the boat was capable of doing until I got her out with her old owner in late September, which is making me crazy to sail her again asap this spring. Anyway, any time on the water, repairing, maintaining, sailing or sitting is better than anything else I can think of, so all-in-all I am very pleased and anxious to get in more time for next year. This was a great year for sailing, even with a wife that doesn't sail as a rule. Sailing with friends (Sherry-Dom-Hans-Chris & Dave) consisted of Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in the bright blue California waters. Sometimes, I had to sail by myself, spending endless hours watching the birds and whales. Every now and then we even slid out for some heavy air/white water sailing in my modified Columbia 22 or Hans ODay 28. Nothing like reefing down the main and putting up the storm jib to get your skills honed for foul weather. In December 2002, I had the opportunity to purchase an Erickson 29 (Wheel Boat) from Catalina Yacht Corp. in Marine Del Rey and will sail her back to Morro Bay in January 2003, weather permitting. The only sad part is having to sale our trusty Columbia after buying the Erickson; like most wifes mine said that I only get one toy at a time. However, this is the best Christmas present that a sailor can have, a great boat and wonderful friends to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus. May all of your sailing be as great as ours! First year a success

After looking from Oct 2001 to March 2002 picked up my first Sailboat. Spent time on others boats but its just not the same as having your own. Bought her in Annapolis and with the help of some veteran salties got her back to Norfolk under steam. Took my lessons at Nortons in Deltaville (highly recommended). Spent many weekends and a few afternoons sailing the Elizabeth to the mouth of the Chesapeake. Would have probably done more if I could get the crew. Next summer hope to spend a week or two, traveling the Chesapeake. Overall a good year and looking for a better one next!

Atlantic Crossing

I did a lot of sailing this year from our base on the east coast of England. Trip to Holland, inland into the canals, going down as you inland! Cruising the English Channel, including a number of firsts for me, the Channel Islands, Brittany Coast, etc. Then to cap it I joined a crew on the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. Rally hit by disaster with one yacht losing a man overboard and the loss of the Hunter 450. A challenging year.

I didn't have enough sailing

I only got in about 20 days of sailing this year. (sigh) I want to do a lot more sailing. If I had my way I would live on a boat full time and sail from one port to another on a leisurly cruise for ever! I did get out; I did sail; I did get certified ASA101,ASA103, and I am taking the coastal nav course so there is some progress to note in my quest to become a competent sailor. Next year I go back to school get my bareboat cert. and nav. cert. I am going to sail more also maybe this year I will sail in San Carlos and to Catalina :) I hope !! Wishing all the best in the new year! Julia S/V Miss Adventure Mac 26D

Hurry up Spring

I took a day's vacation today and spent most of it taking care of things associated with putting the boat away for the winter. Two weeks ago I went down to the lake with the express purpose of removing the sails and adding antifreeeze to the raw water side of the engine. (The water temperature was still in the mid 40's) As it turned out we had a winter storm just a few days prior and the boat was covered with about 4" of ice and snow. I worked about an hour and a half to clear the sickening sight from the topsides. Then I decided I didn't want to take a chance on putting the sails away wet. What else could I do... I went sailing. The wind was perfect, allowing me to set the sails and just ride. I was able to spend most of the afternoon enjoying the bright winter sunshine and the serenity of having the whole lake to my self. I guess knowing this would be the last time sailing this year made it all the more enjoyable. To a point, the afternoon's sail made up for those windless and hot meserable days that made this past summer less than my best sailing season. Hurry up Spring.
