go home

I find that I lose the next day sailing due to feeling lousy after trying to sleep on board. If I go home, even as late as 2 or 2 a.m., I get a better day on the boat the next day. When I sleep on board, I'm exhausted to the point of nausea and/or severe headaches and end up going home to sleep it off. (returning that afternoon or nite or next day)

Slap Silencer

The old Slap Silencer is a must when the wind isn't on the nose. I hope that it never wears out.

Good book

Reading a good book and settling in to the boat noises. About the only noice that gets to me is the halyard slap but a small bungee cord hooked to the halyards and the stay keeps them from slapping. The creak of the boat and the sound of the water on the hull is music to the ears.

Fleece Bags

We use fleece sleeping bags. They roll up very small so they are easy to store. We bought several and use the layering method. One in the summer. As it cools off in the fall we use two (a bag within a bag). When there is frost on the topsides you can even put three together for a warm nights sleep. Paul

Inner Spring Mattress

We had a custom Inner Spring mattress made. No more sleeping on foam... We're very lucky to have an excellent craftswoman who charges reasonable rates. She's now made over 10 for our friends... they love them. She also does custom cushions for salons & cockpits. I don't mean to sound like a commercial ..... I'm just very impressed with the results. Fair Winds and Restful Sleep ...

Travasack is excellent

We tried sleeping bags, blankets, and sheets. When we bought our Travasack - designed for the v-berth - it was incredible. It comes with top and bottom sheets that attach inside the bag with velcro - has a summer side and a winter side - and it's really comfortable. It's less bulky than sleeping bags we had used. And if it gets wet, it dries very quickly. Our Travasack was a little pricey -- but at four years old now, and showing now signs of wear or lumping or shrinking -- if something happened to it, we would immediately replace it with another.

Air Bed

I purchased a custom air bed. You can add or remove air from the bed with an electric pump. There is a separate pump for each half of the approximately queen size bed (C400 master stateroom). It has a heavy, high quality outer cover which makes the air bed appear to be a high quality conventional mattress. I have the same type of mattress (king size) in my home so I get the same quality sleep at home or at the boat.

Riding Sail

I find the one thing that wakes me the most is the boat doing the old anchor dance. I find putting up a riding sail on my aft stay to boom keeps me into the wind and then im not so restless. My wife and I convert the main cabin into a queen size bed and zip two sleeping bags together. Set the drag alarm on the GPS and off we go. Oh and dont drink to much fluids before bed.

Fore/Aft Trim

I find that I'm very sensitive to whether or not my head is higher than my feet. On my C-30, it seems that the bow is always higher than the stern, while the v-berth and the main cabin double are oriented with your head aft. I haven't experimented with adding weight to the bow, but have been thinking about it. Does anyone else have this problem or have you solved it?

Definition of Slap Silencer

The Slap Silencer is a very durable 'diaper' that ties to your aft cleats and wraps under the transom of your boat. It deadens the slapping sound of small wind waves that sound like a cannon in the aft cabin. They've had rave reviews from owners and we sell them in the chandlery here: http://shop.hunterowners.com Just search for Slap Silencer or check the Deck Gear tab.
