I will be taking our 31 into the yard in a few weeks for a fresh coat of bottom paint, what other things might I look for. Does anyone have a list of things to check. Your help is always appreciated
1. Keel joint.2. Cutlass bearing.3. Prop pitch.4. Rudder bearings.5. Keel rust.Frank:I don't know what type of paint you are using but we went with the newer SR formula and think that it is working very well. We go from fresh to salt water periodically and the bottom looks like it was just painted after a trip.
We have the bottom done about every 2-3 years on our H'31. The price has been about $500. This includes the lift, power wash, new paint (just another coat over the old paint), new zincs, misc materials and the environmental fee (state of CA), and the splash.
New Zincs. Also consider putting sling markers on the hull so when the yard lifts the boat it knows where to place the lifting straps ie not near speedo or transducers.
Frank:I do a lot of smaller projects on my boat, but this type of stuff I leave up to the pros. We leave our boat in the water year round so the yard is about 3 miles away down stream from the marina. We take it over on Sunday and the boat is usually back in the water by Tuesday or Wednesday. The last trip to the 'doctor' we had the bottom done and had a cutlass bearing replaced and repitched our 'other' prop and the tab was about $725. This was for whole deal.It is really amazing, we have had the boat since it was new in 1986 and this guy has not changed his prices. Remember he does not sand the bottom, just a power wash and he will clean up and rough spots. Then he applies the new paint over what ever is left on the hull after the power wash.
The price of a new shaft zinc. Have enough paint left from last year for one coat. Sanding and painting the bottom of my H37C is an easy one day deal. Last year's scraping and sanding to bare gelcoat and barrier coating was NOT!
ALL GATE VALVE FUNCTIONS, IF THEY DON'T WORK THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO REPLACE, THE INSIDE OF YOUR ENGINE INTAKE SCREEN CAN BE CLOGGED WHILE THE OUTSIDE IS LOOKING GOOD, THE SEAM BETWEEN THE LEAD OR STEEL KEEL AND THE HULL,RUDDER POST CONDITION, ALSO CHECK THE CUTLASS BEARING FOR SLOP, ON YOUR PROP SHAFT, BLISTERS,AND STRESS CRACKS.
