Left out of Ft.Meyers this morning, heading for the Tortugas. Had waited an extra day here, because the weather forecast was not very good, but was about perfect for today. Of course weather forecasts are never wrong. This morning it was pretty nice, but as the day progressed, things continually got worse. Was not going to turn back, no matter what. Yeah, I know, hard headed and stubborn, thats me.
The thunderstorms kept popping up, getting more dense, and making more wind. By 2PM, winds were up to 25 to 30 knots. Seas approaching 10 to 12 feet. Steep, confused and close together. Still, the thought was to keep going. Had rolled up about 40% of the jib, and was about to reef the main, when BAM. Bow went way under, and when it came up, I no longer had a line to roll up the jib, and the bow light was torn away and just gone. I guess you could call what went on after that an adventure. Managed to get up on the bow, fish out the broken end of the furler line from the drum, and tie the broken pieces together. Of course the knot wouldn't fit through the blocks, so started one by one removing them. Then I discovered there wasn't enough line left to roll the jib all the way up. About 25% of it still out. So, I dropped the main, turned around and headed back to Ft. Meyers, using what jib was out, and the engine. I have about decided that there was something floating in the face of the wave I hit, and not just the wave. There is about 4 or 5 feet of the furler line for the jib just not there any more. The bow light was ripped completely off the bracket, and the front of the anchor roller is badly bent. Made it back to the marina in Ft.Meyers with no more problems, and will get things fixed and a new light installed tomorrow. And then off for the Tortugas again.

I'm sorry to hear that

Phil, but a full main with building winds and seas??? Shoot, I reef for the entire summer season here in April and don't take the reef out until September!:):):) Easy for me to say...

Glad to hear you're all OK.

Weather

I was watching the weather yesterday morning thinking maybe go out for a early sail but so hot down at the boat, maybe go another day this week or weekend.
Went into the pool at the Marina and than home into the pool and was watching the dark clouds south and hearing thunder in the distance, decided to leave the pool before the storm hit.
Well we never got the storm not even a drop of rain which we dearly need, the storm stayed south of us down by you Phil, saw on the news that south of us got heavy rain with real bad street flooding, wish we would have gotten some of that rain.
Good luck and have a safe trip.

Wow.. Not an easy one, Phil.. Glad you are OK.. I had a roller furling line chafe through when about 50% reefed and beating into a stout wind.. Having a LOT of sail all of a sudden was .. uhhhhh.... interesting, as I am sure you noted !!! I was lucky that I had an experienced crewman aboard who quickly went forward and hand rolled the sail back up and pinned the drum in place ..
That wave must have had something in it.. a barrel or piece of log to do that kind of damage.. Strange!..
Again, glad to hear that ya OK and pressing on..

It's a long way up to the bow on a 37 footer, huh?

I can absolutely imagine going upfront in that weather! Then to have to remove blocks (one by one!) to get the headsail furled? Not a great day. You'd think that Poseidon would be kinder after you sacrificed a day for the weather.

Sorry to hear about your anchor roller and lights... takes alot of force to bend the roller- maybe you really did hit something!

Good luck making it the the Tortugas... it's usually a real nice sail out to there. Keep us updated- and not just on the bad stuff!

Pics please!
The sea gods were hungry for a bow light with a side of furling line??(sailing dog)

was toooo busy top get pix, sorry--will try harder next time lol......phil asked what the red/green thing was we passed--i sed was from his bow----i didnt realize then there was missing line as well---i figgered the gods of sea wanted a bright thing for a pendant then needed the line for a necklace------we willset out again in the morning---we will only return for other major breakage --anything which would impede further forward progress lol.......was a bit on the busy side--sorry i couldnt take pix---i had both hands on wheel and trying to keep the boat in a forward moving direction--wasnt always easy......hopefully the sea gods got their fill of our things lol.....we have been most fortunate in this voyage as not many bad things have happened---mostly near perfect---weather and sailing have been as good as can get and we are still talking after a month in small places.....and kat only thinks we are trying to kill him..he is losing weight from loss of appetite after excitement....poor boy...as for phil going forward----i could not see him over the dink on bow--i wasnt sure he was still there a couple of times but he holds on tight and doesnt let the water grab him tooo hard.....i think we will be ok and we have been having soooo much fun.....is awesome to catch fishies in blue water ....lol....wooohoooooo.....a little hard work is ok and worth the effort ...i didnt feel anything ion the wave that hit the boat but i coulda been mistaken--had to keep the jib luffing and main luffing forever in this---is a goood thing we both know how to sail and have done so at prior times in our previous lives lol.....he got thre main down but not all flaked--i got to it and rolled as well as i could and tied it so as to prevent tooo much windage in the return --by the time we got to the entrance of the harbor the entire mayhem was over and loooked like a nice day in the park except for the stuff floating on the water from the wind and rain pullin gstuff from the shore ....rained 4 inches in ft myers beach while we were gone .....i have seen water remove fiberglasss from boats that were sailing blue water---water damage can be intense......but i dunno what made the parts become lost.....

NHC Says:
1. A TROPICAL WAVE OVER THE FAR NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA IS PRODUCING
DISORGANIZED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FROM CUBA AND THE CAYMAN
ISLANDS WESTWARD TO THE YUCATAN PENINSULA...AND SATELLITE IMAGES
INDICATE THAT THE LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION IS NOT WELL-DEFINED.
SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS NOT EXPECTED TODAY
ALTHOUGH ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS SHOULD BECOME MORE FAVORABLE FOR
SOME DEVELOPMENT ONCE THE SYSTEM MOVES INTO THE SOUTHERN GULF OF
MEXICO TONIGHT. THERE IS A MEDIUM CHANCE...30 TO 50 PERCENT...
OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS WILL AFFECT PORTIONS OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL
CUBA...THE CAYMAN ISLANDS...AND THE YUCATAN PENINSULA TODAY AND
COULD SPREAD NORTHWARD TOWARDS SOUTH FLORIDA OVER THE NEXT DAY OR
SO.

ELSEWHERE...TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.

People are generally pointing to the west (Gulf) coast of Florida, but a lot of the models are just not sure right now. If it shoots the gap between the Yukatan penninsula and Cuba it stands a very good chance to strengthen and organize. There are also two storms rolling off West Coast of Africa that people should be aware of.
