Boat US

When we first got our 1967 Tartan 27' four years ago we got insurance from BoatUS for about $700 which included a replacement value of $7K. That same year our single mooring pennant chafed in a nasty westerly blow and our boat got lodged under a dock, bow in, that damaged the RF and shredded the genoa, killed the bow pulpit and damaged the hull/deck joint for about 1 foot. BoatUS was helpful in getting the local salvor to capture our boat and left it at a marina at City Island. Luckily the engine and prop seemed fine so we motored to our winter yard in Glen Cove NY. We had trouble getting anyone to do an estimate on the repairs and so put one together ourselves that quickly added up to around $5K. BoatUS considered our boat totalled which they apparently do anytime a claim reaches 50% or more of the insured value. This meant that they now owned our boat and we had to buy it back from them for $800 so we got a check for $6200 to do the repairs. We could have taken the $7K but would have had no boat. This practice is a little bit underhanded but I was ultimately happy that we were insured with them. I ended up doing most of the repairs myself and learned a lot. The following year BoatUS would not insure us since we had been totalled so we went 1 season without any. Many insurers do not like insuring boats as old as mine and Ross'. My big concern that season was potential damage we could have caused to other more expensive boats out there if anything went wrong. I considered trying to get liability only but we ended up getting coverage through my partner's homeowner's insurance carrier for about $350. No new claims yet - knock on wood, er, fiberglass.

Fuel Spill Protection

Can anyone fill me in on the "fuel spill protection" mentioned above. I never thought about this before. I would not let a fuel spill happen but stuff happens when you least expect it. If a fuel spill occured... How responsible are we in the face of the law? What should we do? Are some areas different? What are the consequences of an accidential fuel spill to the boat owner? Do we require a special addition to our Insurance. I would be greatful for any advise or information.

Fuel spill

Speaking with a coast guard guy a few years ago about fuel spills, he said that we are responsible for all fuel spills, even small ones while filling. Since then, I have made it a point not to fuel up if a coast guard boat is also at the dock. The law states if you leave a sheen on the water you are subject to a fine.

Insurance claim

Several years ago, high water raised my dock to the top of the pilings. High wind broke the pilings off, and dock with about 40 boats attached went into the Columbia River. A tug boat pushed the whole mass onto the Washington State shore to protect bridges from damage. My insurance covered about $5,000 in damage. I was lucky, a number of boats sank. I'm insured with the company that covers our home and cars also.

fuel spill insurance

Just got my renewal from boat US and they included a note that said that liability for fuel spills had increased from $500,000 to $800,000, so they increased that coverage by the same amount. We don't exactly sail the Exxon Valdez.

How about Canada?

Anyone insuring in Canada? We are currently insured with the same carrier as our home insurance but it sounds like specialty marine insurance is far superior. Do we have that up here???

Canadian Insurance

I went with Cowan Marine Insurance, I don't remember their underwriter offhand. They offer agreed value, non-depreciated coverage. There is also Skipper's Plan, same type of coverage. Both were $1,000 range, same type of coverage / deductibles for a 2005 H33

Canadian Boat Insurers

There are at least several Canadian Boat Insurers. A good place to look is in Canadian Boating Magazines eg. GAM on Yachting or Canadian Yachting. Three national insurers that specialize in pleasure boats that come to mind are Robertson and Robertson Insurance, Mitchel Sandham Insurance and Cowan Insurance. My insurance is through Cowan Insurance for a couple of reasons: 1. They are the insurance company endorsed by the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons and provide discounts for having taken courses through the above organization 2. They provide special coverages for Power and Sail Squadron Members (lower deductibles on electronics and personal effects, credit for safety equipment carried, etc, etc) 3. They were $200 to $400 cheaper than the competitors (I have 5 courses which give me a good discount)* *The above reflects my situation. You can only insure through Cowan if you join the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (CPS). You can only join the Squadron if you pass its' Boating Course (covers quite a bit more material (navigataion and seamanship) than required for your PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operators Cerificate). If you haven't already got your PCOC then the CPS course more than qualifies you for that as well as gets you cheaper and better insurance. For CPS info click here http://www.cps-ecp.ca/ My suggestion is to contact insurers that advertise in Canadian boating publications, get quotes and make sure you compare each coverage and deductible with your pariticular situation in mind.

West coast Canadian insurance

I insure with Hub International TOS out of the North Vancouver office. They have a number of other offices in the lower mainland and on Vancouver Island. I've never had a claim, but anyone I know who has reports excellent service. Several local yacht clubs use them.

Malcolm, I don't beleive you have to be a member of CPS, but there is a discount if you belong to CPS. That's the way I read their site. I was refered to them by Angus Yachts and did go with them as well. BTW, the boat should be wet by next weekend. yahooo!!

first year claim

We had great experience with Boat U.S. the first summer we had our boat, we had a galley fire, and ~ $1,800 in damage. Sent in the quotations and supporting photographs, check to cover the repairs arrived the same week! The work was done and the boat looked better than new.

You are right! You don't have to be a member of CPS - although passing CPS courses and carrying specific safety equipment beyond regulations does get you a discount. The first launch date (my date) for Kincardine was to be this Saturday. Happily all has been delayed a week so we can get some paint on the bottom and wax on the topsides. Some good warm weather coming finally!

Boat US came through for us, albeit slooowly

We bumped over a rock, had a diver take a look and declare all was good, then 18 mo later when we hauled out for bottom paint we found out otherwise. $32k later, all we had to cover was the deductible, which was a VERY pleasant surprise. Only complaint is that the insurance saga started in early May and took until the end of Aug to be done, really could have taken 6 weeks but the adjuster made 4 trips and it took a week or 2 for each trip for him to get there and send his report. Ugh, like Seattle doesn't have a short enough summer anyway, and moorage aint cheap when you think you'll be done any week and you keep paying it. We were happy that the first yard we took it to was accepted by Boat U.S., and they did issue us interim checks as the work progressed, so other than the slow adjuster, I thought Boat US treated us well and we'll stick with them.
