This happened to a friend of mine while sailing his Santana 21 alone on lake Michigan. He had just been out for a day sail. While sailing toward the inlet of the breakwall near Southshore Yacht Club in Milwaukee, Dan came about and as he was bringing in the starboard sheet for his jib, it got caught on something . So Dan being the industrious person that he is and not wanting to lose one precious second lashed his tiller in place and went forward to free up the sheet. Well about this time a 4 foot roller hit the beam of his Santana and he being the well balanced Iron worker that he is fell over board. As this happened he realized that his boat was on a direct course for th breakwall with the tiller lashed in place to hold course. Lucky for him he had also been rather sloppy with one of his dock lines it happened to be trailing the boat in the water. He just caught the end of it as it went past. He struggled back to the cockpit and was able to turn the boat in time. This all happened to the amusement of several other boaters that were watching. And just for the record I don't usually tell stories like this about my friends but Dan has told this account a number if times himsel, and being best friends it seems like my duty to tell this one to as many people as I can.
