A Free Detail ? -Yes-

Well, my marina called and said they had news for me. Turns out their "new guy" mistook my blue hull boat for a different blue hull boat that was slated for a full detail. Well, in short, my boat got detailed for free by the marina.
I do feel appropriately guilty though. That would have been a full day's job for me.
For now I taped the bottom for some anti-fouling paint. I'll get to that this weekend if the weather holds off a bit.
I have been to many marinas but the one I am at now is for sure staffed with people who care about their patrons. A free detail doesn't hurt my opinion of them either.
Thanks for looking.

Maybe an appropriate tip for the person who actually did the work probably would not be refused...?

Some compensation is only fair given you benefited from the mistake. I doubt they will forget that weren't considerate of their error.

I plan on giving them my business by going there again next year to haul for the season. Absolutely, if I see the person who did it, I'll give him/her a nice tip. I'm not really concerned about obligations. The first thing the told me is it's free. Like I said I do feel appropriately guilty.
The analogous example is, if someone came and paved your driveway when they should have paved you neighbor's, would you feel obligated to pay for the driveway...No.

Just be careful, if you're painting the bottom after the detailing, that wax overspray and flyoff from the machine hasn't polluted the bottom where you want paint to stick. This could result in more work for you, not less, as you'll have to chemically wash and possibly mechanically scrape away the surfaces.

I'd tip the guy a steak sandwich and a beer. That's what usually gets me to do things.

hummm....it may be appropriate to find out how much a detail job like that would cost and tip the guy 20% ...might help his guilt as well and relieve your...or you could let the marina do your bottom paint to let them know you are grateful for there mistake...then you would have gotten a hell of a good deal ...2 for 1.....so to speak....but still tip the yard guy that did the detail work mistakenly
