I posted a variant of these on another forum, but thought throwing them into a "deeper pool " of trim knowledge would help!
I'm in the end of my first season " re-learning" sailing after several years, aboard our 82h 27 "muskrat love" down here on lake norman, a relatively large but broken up interior lake.
So...I'm having a ball, but it seems like getting the first 4 or 5 knots of hull speed out of her is relatively easy, but that last knot or so is pretty elusive..I'm fact, yet to be found. I, running a 120 genoa, often sailing a beam reach do to how the prevailing winds blow from our marina.
1: with no boom vang on that boat, main sheet adjustment leads to boom lift, changing the sail shape pretty dramatically.
2: I hesitate to carry even more headsail canvas, because of the shrouds, but broad reaches and downwind runs do happen .
Should I consider installing a boom vang,possibly getting a gennaker, or other hardware additions to get more speed out of her, or is that just a case of adding more variables, and I should just get better at trimming what I got? My knowledge on sail trim pretty much ends at letting it out till it luffa, then trimming back in until it stops, and the tighter into the wind, the tighter the trim should be...and that's it. And Ido have Some idea of reading the tells.
Any help would be appreciated, since she sails like a floating minivan most of the time, but every once in a while, she wakes up and gives me a little growl, like a dodge caravan with a hemi hidden inside....
