Downwind I would use a tight outhaul to flatten the mainsail and provide maximum sail area to the wind. A loose outhaul will only bag the sail. Agree on the backstay.

Ease the outhaul to provide a fuller main shape. Also ease the backstay if you have one.

The outhaul is usually only eased all the way off (approximately 100mm from maximum tension) when sailing off the wind

Downwind
Sail depth -- In general, you want a fuller main shape downwind than upwind. This means you should ease the outhaul... when you go around the windward mark
