I would be interested in seeing sailing shots. I'm looking for a few
nice sailing pictures, to hang about my work area, to inspire me to
work on the new boat.

I would also like to see close up pictures, to compare to mine, to see
what should be where.

Good morning fellow Vega-tarians,
Is there any experience in the group with putting threadmaster decking
material on the Vega?
I am contemplating whether to paint her decks anti-slip or putting this
material on.
I am especially interested in:
-cost involved, I am Dutch :)
-durability (I\'ve seen some pretty ugly examples of curling sides and ugly
patches)
-process of laying it on the boat (DIY)
-ease of cleaning the deck (I sail with a crew of 4 and 7 Year olds with
sometimes muddy feet)
Any comments and remarks greatly appreciated, best regards,

Hello Hielke, I wouldn't recomend it. It looks good when it goes down and it
has excellent antiskid properties. However it adds weight to the topsides,
it isn't something you would want to fall down on and it is expensive. We
bought 5 sheets and had to buy 2 more. I can't remember the price but it was
around $90.00 US for a sheet. I think quality control must be lacking. The
origional sheets did'nt hold up very well at all. Our foredeck got the last
two sheets and looks good, the side decks and cabin top aged quickly. Any
constant weight will compress it and when the weight is removed the material
stays compressed. A company called Evercoat makes a a paint additive called
Skid-No-More. I used this on some dock steps I built and found it difficult
to work with. I also used ground Walnut shells in the paint on some other
steps I built. Easier to work with but very abrasive when I tripped on them.
My origional treatment was exterior latex paint with a medium grit sand
spread over it while it was still wet. After it drys brush or vacum the sand
off and re-coat with thinned latex paint. After that drys one more coat of
latex. It held up well and was cheap. I plan on getting rid of the
treadmaster and going back to the sand and latex. Good luck. Walt

Dear Hielke,

My experience with threadmaster decking is a favourable one.

First I painted the deck with mono-polyurethane paint. That was fine, but
the deck became too slippery.

So I mixed the mono-polyurethane paint with fine glasspearls and
painted the parts of the deck where you walk, as a rule, the result looked
magnificient. However, ..... in the course of the season the \'rough\' part
of the deck became grey and dirty, due to precipitation from the air.
After all our air is not so clean any more. I tried cleaning it , to no
avail. It looked old and dirty after one season only.

So I read about threadmaster and ínspected some yachts here in the
Naarder Yachting Harbour.
One Vega use black threadmaste and indeed, it had plenty of curling
sides and dirty patches.

So I bought a off- white threadmaster , cut it to measure and glued it on
the deck. Mind you there is a special expensive glue for this, you have to
roughen the deck first with suitable sanders. (And lots of sanding
papers).

Now its fine, some patches were dirty and greenish with algae. I
brushed it thouroughly yesterday and it looks like new again.

I bought the threadmaster from Vreeken Zeilmakerij in Loosdrecht.

Good luck.

Hielke, Like Henk, I used the offwhite also. If you decide to go with the
treadmaster avoid anything with pigment in it. The whiter it is the more it
reflects heat instead of absorbing it. We used epoxy thickened with a bit of
silica to make it into a paste and it worked fine to glue it down with. I
wish I had the same results as Henk. I'm not looking forward to pulling it
all up. Walt

Finn,
Thanks for your offer of help. I am in Vlissingen, Nederland to pick up my boat, and do not have the opportunity to arrange anything with the photographer. I would really appreciate any help you can give me to get a picture or pictures of the regatta . I have access to the internet via Internet Cafe here in Holland. Thanks. Let me know if you can do anything or not, otherwise I will try myself in 2 weeks when I return home. Frank Gallardo

Hi Frank, an internet café in Vlissingen ??? :)
If you take the inland route (standing mast) up north through Holland,
checkout www.staandemast.nl or http://www.fun2sail.com (in English) with the
route, time for all the bridges & locks (this is a nice thing to print out!)
You\'re going to pass my "home lakes" Braasem & Westeinder (just under
Amsterdam) but in about a week my annual holidays start and we\'ll be going
up north as well...
Have a nice trip (it is),
