A Few Fuel Tank Questions

I removed my fuel tank the other day to replace the board under it, and clean out the tank. There is a sending unit on the top of the tank that is for a gauge. There are five small bolts holding the gauge to the top of the tank, and a single post for a wire in the middle. My boat has never had a fuel gauge on it, and I would like to add one. How would I test the sending unitto see if it works, and how would I wire it up to a gauge? I have a gauge. also, I would like to put an access in the tank to clean it out. Is this something that I could buy, or something I would have to have made? If I could buy it, Where would I find one?

You might want to consider having the tank reconditioned if the boat is old. they have an epoxy process that I had done and the place guaranteed it for life. A place that does this could probably answer your questions.

here are all your answers. The gage can be hooked up with two wires. Positive to the post, negative to one of the mounting screws in contact with the base. A standard Tempo electric gage should work. Put an ohm meter on the terminal and mounting plate--moving the arm should read from about 30 to 230 ohms--the gage standard. Wiring diagram on the gage package will show you the overall hook-up.

A clean-out port can be obtained from SeaBuilt out in the Seattle area--SS is recommended and expensive.

Thanks Higgs, The tank is plastic and in good shape. I actually got it cleaned out today and it wasn't bad on the inside. I expected the worst with it being 26 years old. as fo the gauge, there are five terminals, a + and - for the light, a + and - for the gauge, and a terminal for the sender. from other information that I've found, the sending unit gets grounded from one of the bolts holding it down. It also needs to be switched either through a regular switch, or through the ignition switch. does this sound right?
