I live on my boat so I do not have a renters or homeowners policy. I do have a proper yacht policy with coverage for $20,000 personal belongings. It also covers equipment layed up in a storage unit(boom, sails, lines, etc)

The problem is that it will not cover the contents of my car or the 2 high end mountain bikes on the rack.

The company is Acadia and they will not schedule my bikes or the contents of my car. My auto insurance will not cover the contents or the bikes either.

Anyone know of a good insurance company that will cover these items without renters or homeowners?

Thanks

Good Question!

Even if you did have a renter's policy, it would have limits on off-premises coverage, so I'm not sure there would be enough to cover the bikes value.

Did you try to get renters coverage (contents-only) policy? I know some live-aboards that do have it, but they also have storage rentals, so that could be different.

I doubt you will find anyone to insure a vehicle's non-automotive equipment contents. As for the bikes, I'd suggest calling a couple of big bike shops to see if there is a specialty insurer providing coverage for bikes only. Given the value of high end bikes, it wouldn't surprise me.

Good luck!

I have state farm.
Years ago when I raced motorcross, I was at a diner and when I came out low and behold my riding gear bag was missing from the back of my truck.
I called my insurance and figured I get the "wellup you loose".
But I had full coverage on my truck and it covered personal property in it, so most of it (after the deductable, was covered).
It also covers the bike and trailer hooked to it.
My present motorcycle insurance covers all my persoanl stuff in the saddle bag and such, (I know cuz I asked).
If your car was broken into and your radio and a camera was taken it'd be covered right?
Why not the bikes locked on a carrier on top?
If not, can they put a rider on your coverage to cover them? (I get the rack covered too)

We used some pretty shady insurance companies while my children were in collage to cover dorm room stuff and i am less than sure they would have paid a claim

Its not like the even really want to cover your home anymore as they keep coming up with shady stuff like the named storm deductible becasue everybody got 5% laying around to cover the first 30 or 40 k

I am in the insurance business, owned my own agency for 30 years for the biggest direct writer. Joe you lucked out. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard "but I have FULL COVERAGE".... No your personal prop is not covered under your car ins, but there is SOME coverage if your entire car is stolen.

Tim. Yes try to get some Renters Insurance, but keep in mind you will pay $150-200 a year, plus you'll probably have a $1000 deductible. Worth it? So I would ask you, other than the bikes, whats the value of your car contents? Yes you can probably buy a separate "floater type" policy to cover sports equip (bikes), maybe $100 a yr. I would consider NOT keeping bike on top of your car, maybe onboard, and get a BIG lock or two. I own expensive road bikes, when in doubt, I drop the wheels off and put them IN MY CAR...

Just my 2 cents......

Tim,

I know it's a PITA every time you want to ride but feel free to leave the bikes at our house....

Thanks MS. I would still like to find insurance though. I want to be able to cover some of Kathy's jewelry, the bikes and vehicle contents when we do have something valuable in there.

Tim, as I mentioned, check with a trustworthy "independent" agent in your area. They may have carriers that can fit your need with a separate "personal articles floater" as a stand alone policy. Most "big box" companies want the underlying home/renters before they will do a floater. But an independent may be able to help you. Or check with your car insurance carrier to see if they will write floater, which will be separate policy on jewelry & bikes. They will need appraisals on jewelry.
