Hunter 340 San Diego
Hello everyone... Ok this is a funny story (well right now it's not... but I can see how one day it will be funny) that I just had to post. As perhaps some of you might remember I have been having difficulties with the old Raymarine 4000ST autopilot aboard my Hunter 340. I have the older model wheelpilot with the black ring and recently the belt inside the wheelpilot began to wear out and the autopilot has not been functioning properly as a result. So I decide to begin looking into either how to replace the worn out belt or upgrade my whole autopilot system. Long story short I discover that Raymarine no longer produces the belt I need to repair the wheelpilot drive ring and that I might have to replace the whole unit because I can't get a .50 cent belt that has worn out (which when Raymarine was producing them cost $50 of course). Anyway this caused me to ask around on this board if anyone knew where I could find the now discontinued belt and basically a long search lead me to distributer in England who still had these belts in stock. I buy the belt from him and he sends it to me. Ok advance forward about three weeks from when I paid for the belt and it still hasn't arrived from England. Several E-mails to this gentleman assures me that the belt is on his way but that he sent it via "standard airmail" which apparently is English slang for "The slow boat from China". Meanwhile I'm still trying to use my autopilot as is whenever I'm out as the worn out belt is only mostly worn out and it will still kinda keep a course if there isn't any weather helm and it doesn't have to turn more than 1-2 degrees at any one time (read: basically it works when I'm motoring into completely calm seas). I keep waiting for this belt to arrive so I can fix the autopilot ring and it just doesn't seem to get here. So last weekend I'm out again and I'm backing into my slip with a awful 20knot quartering wind which keeps threatening to push my boat into the one docked next to me or into the dock itself as I’m backing into my slip. me into the boat next to me and while attempting to make this difficult maneuver my wheel suddenly locks up on me. I don't have time to look to see what is wrong and have to force the wheel over and while I'm doing this I hear something snap below. I manage to get the boat docked but when I look down at the wheel pilot several of the gears are hanging out of the big black ring and there are pieces of plastic on the deck where they have broken through. Further evaluation reveals that the old belt had finally broken in two (why it broke in two when the autopilot wasn’t engaged I’ll never know) and had jammed in the ring (causing the wheel to lock up) and then had broken the entire ring when I forced it over. I sigh when I look at it and realize that there is now absolutely no way to repair the ring even with the new belt and I will have to shell out nearly $1200 for a newer SP1 system. ...to add to the irony the belt I was waiting for from England arrives the next day. ...A day late and a dollar short... I'm sure this will all be very funny one day. -Levin

Actually...

I am laughing now. But not at, mind you, but with you. Murphy rules, no "ifs", "ands", or "buts" about it. Sorry to hear of your dilemma. Good luck.

Something to think about for your next one

You know the belt driven autopilots are better than the direct gear driven type in one way. In an emergency you can grab the wheel and turn it and the wheel can be turned without breaking anything. but the belt just flexes. There is a modification that gives much longer belt life and more positive steering without slippage if you make it. I have a Barefoot 37 Custom CC Sloop by Irwin (Read 20000#+) with a modified rudder (read bigger) and when I looked for a wheel pilot in 1994 Ray Marine wasn't an option and Autohelm wauld not recommend there wheel pilot on anything over 16000#s. I ended up with a Nanico 5000 (later bought out by Simron. Navico suggested that at the forces developed by my boat that I would be best advised to take a cogged belt and cut it, and glue it backwards on the wheel ring. They believed that the ring wasn't rough enough to hold the belt with my loads. They said they didn't advertise this modification because of liability issues, but I should try it. - so I did it! The belt doesn't slip and it still is flexible enough so that it stretches enough such as in an emergency or in a knock down round up, the wheel might slip just enough to overcome by hand or prevent anything from breaking. The interesting thing is that although I have a spare belt, that I have 14 years use on the belt with 6 years in the Mexican sun, and that I have put over 1400 hrs on my engine and much more sailing; that I am still using the same belt - and it's not worn out yet..

Very expensive funny story. After careful consideration

and analisis of the situation I have concluded the breakeage was avoidable and it was mainly due to the failure of not having the belt shipped via priority airmail. The facts support that if the belt would have arrived earlier the failure would have never ocurred. Don't feel guilty for ignoring early warning signs and for not anticipating the the possible consequences as it is totally the fault of the Britts. After all what damage could be expected to arise from a $0.50 belt. Sorry about that, hope you may be able to repair the unit.

If the rest of the system

If the rest of your system is OK, and just the wheel drive unit is bad, you can buy just the drive unit on ebay, ( new ) for around 500. Raymarine has everyone in kind of a bind right now as they have announced the new X5 is coming, so everyone wants to wait. Now I am hearing it will be late June before release. So I am going to just go with the S1 and be done with it. I once couple years ago put a Autohelm 3000 on a S37 to bring the boat home. I knew the pilot wasn't rated for that much boat, but what the hell. I had it, and figured anything was better than nothing. Ended up stopping the belt slippage by using close pins, to hold the belt to the drum. Worked good enough to get me home.

opportunity

So now your unit is pretty much worthless. Spend the extra money and get a below deck model. You will not regret it.

We've been using a 20 year old drum on the wheel and replacing belts. Also, I have a new drum which I intend to install soon, since the old drum is getting worn. The belt is visible. The compass is included in the control head, so no extra wiring and finding a location for the fluxgate. It works great, no windy courses or unexpected inconsistencies. Now if they only didn't continue making the head end unit and the motor. Darn that Raymarine. And even WM still has the belts available in their 2008 catalog.
