A couple of tips about my ole'leaky Mariner

Hey- Though I would share a few successes with my boat. I posted last year on the board about water in the cabin. I keep the boat on a morring and it is a 1974 Mariner in much better than average shape. Every weekend, I would be bailing out a couple inches of water. Bailing is not the problem but rather the effects of having the water 'sit' on the cabin floor is only doing to seep into the hull over time. I had three thoughts: 1- Centerboards Truck 2- Centerboard pivot bolt and gaskets 3- thru hull via cracks in liner (long shot considering how much water over a short period) 4- leaks in hatch/companionway 5- leaks at seal inside rubrail along boat. 6- tubes that drain cockpit via cabin Well, being a mariner, I looked for the cheapest and easiest solutions first. Using a garden hose I was able to determine 4 and 5 were leaking. 6 was definately not a problem. 1-3 were too much work. I did not want to remove the rubrail because it was secure and in good shape, so I applied a bead of silicone around the cabintop/hull from the inside. After several anxiety attacks after wedging my head aft in the Mariner, job complete. Next day, I soaked the boat with hose. Dry. Good Next weekend. There is 2" water back in the boat. No rain all week. So, now I know the water is coming from below. Being a moron, I never though about researching the water beforehand. This past off season, I dropped the CB and replaced the gaskets. No small job. I did not really think this would solve my problem. But 5 months later I can say the Mariner has been dry all year. Bone dry. So, if you are getting a little water in your cabin, this is where I would look. I bought the gaskets from Stuart Mariner for under $20. Good Luck, Craig

Thanks for the update

Its good to hear that you got the leaking under control. Nothing is more infuriating. I spent this Columbus day weekend sitting aboard, below, and counting the leaks that weren't there last spring. Justin - O'day Owner's Web
