Every once in a while you come across an item on the internet or on someone else's boat that you say what a great idea, gotta have one. These could be work savings items or something that will make life a little or the boat a little faster. Here a couple that sort of fall into the 2nd category, are inexpensive and more importantly they work. I thought I would share with other forum members.

Item 1

After too many walking trips to far off grocery stores while cruising, we decided that lugging gallons of bottled drinking water back to the boat was not only expensive but also not fun nor economical. Not that the water in our water tank was unusable but it had a plastic taste to it. Last winter I tracked down a filter that has been a saving grace. Honestly one of those items that every boat could benefit from. It is not permanently fitted and only used for drinking water, but the self contained pitcher fits great in the fridge to give a cold drink when wanted.

The pitcher comes with a robust adapter that you simple thread on after removing the one on your galley faucet. Details can be found here:

Consumer Reports rated over 45 water filters. This little guy came in 3rd behind a $1800 Kinetico and $1000 Amyway filter. But ahead of many others valued at $300 - $1000.

Item 2

Water pooled around the faucet when the duty dishwasher rinsed dishes. As we have a limited capacity of onboard fresh water (50 gals), we are mindful of domestic water usage. When we rinsed each dish the water was turned on at the faucet, soap rinsed off the item, water turned off at the faucet. Each time this process was carried out, some water was wasted and also water drip off our hands and accumulated on the countertop. I searched long and hard (online and in stores) to find a simple and inexpensive solution to this problem. Finally I found the answer almost on my doorstep. Near as I can tell, the aerator is made by Avanta but other than that there is not a lot of reference to it since about 2010. In Canada, Canadian Tire carries 2 models: a swivel ($16) and a non-swivel ($14). Both are metal and come with an adaptor allowing both male and female thread installation.

Len P,

Jill and I moved aboard our 27 foot boat in 1996, then cruised full time from 2004 to late 2008. During that time we discover or came across many little things that made life better aboard. Things just like you are talking about. We started a list back in 2007 or so and it's grown to about 100 now.

I have had some spare time lately and made a batch of short (2 to 3 min or so) videos that we have posted to YouTube. If your interested, you are welcome to take a look at;

We LOVE the small stuff that does not cost a full “boat unit”! :)
