I have been on this board for a number years and I must say, that I find its present makeup to be the best I have seen. I remember last winter we had a number of individuals who were rather aggressive and unpleasant when they disagreed with someone's post. We no longer see very much of that. i don't know if Phil has disinvited some of these individuals - and if he has I applaud the move - but right now I am enjoying the board more than ever. There has been a lot of great topics and discussion. We don't always agree, but we have been respectful of each other. i continue to learn a lot here, despite owning a boat for over 30 years. Thanks.

what???

Don't go over to the "Sails Call Lounge"... its a jungle over there! Everyone pissing and moaning about something. Must be a Move-On-Dot-Org. extension of some sort. This forum has been very helpful to me (new-bie this year). Rich

Higg's I have to agree!

It has been quite lately. On one of the busnut foroums I watch there was a message like this; "For (Fill in the name), be warned that you will not be allowed to mess up this forum like you did the (Fill in the name of the forum) and I will be watching. I am a GOLBAL Moderator of this forum and will be watching you!" It got pretty wild. After everone called the guy out he finally apologized to everyone and has turned out to be a neat guy! Jack

no way

Higgs you're full of crap. May a sick seagull poop all over your boat. Why do so many people destroy the internet by being nice to each other? I'll have to go elsewhere to get my fix. Actually, i read lots of stuff on other forums (if that's plural) and HOWs is by far both more civil and informative and when we do disagree, I hope I emulate everyone else who do so respectfully.

I have noticed the absence of a few former

visitors this year. I don't call them members because most never joined and posted a profile. Anybody that wants can dig out more details of our lives than we will post on this forum. I don't have any more hostile exchanges with other posters. It is easy to disagree without being disagreeable. Higgs you are bang on with your observation.

Your post belongs on the Sails Call Lounge board. I sounds like that Move-On-Dot-Org or Swift-Boater Dot-Org hog wash!

Agree 100%

I agree 100% but the real test won't be until mid February after we've all been kooked up inside for way too long....

It’s hard to imagine this as an unfriendly place

It’s hard to imagine this as an unfriendly gathering place. It’s one of the better if not the best groups that I have seen. All the best, Robert Gainer

Absolutely right!

Love this forum, and indeed all the fora (There's your plural!) associated with Sailboatownersdotcom. The vast majority of posters are civil and courteous. I have learned much from being an occasional visitor, although I was vitriolically pooh-poohed last year for a suggestion I made. Turned out that the naysayers were strictly armchair sailors...

Agreed. Or not?

I too enjoy this forum and reading many threads of interest. Phil must be doing a good job of keeping the spammers out and other malcontents relegated over to the Sails Call Lounge. There is some disturbing content over there so vent your politics and religeon over there if the muse sings for you. The CSBB or Cruiser's Forum also turns up some interesting information on almost everything, but it can get personal quickly. So, do I agree or not?

Just keeping it real

I agree, I think a lot of it has to do with relegating the swabbies to the "Sails Call Lounge". (I refuse to go there, so there is no need to register) On the other hand I am VERY glad that this forum hasn't devolved into milk toast & wimps. If it did, I think it soon would become boring and lose meaning to most of us. I am glad there are strong opinions floating around on this board. I think the difference between the strong opinions on this board and the "flames" I see on the other boards is that people here will back it up with research or personal experiences. The other boards have some weak losers that can't debate so they change the topic or insult. All in all a good board with strong opinions that are usually backed up.

I Agree !!

I have to completely agree. I really enjoy reading this forum. I get "little nuggets" of knowledge, that will be useful down the bay. I wish I had the "wit" that some have. I know the sails call lounge has taken away some of the banter and I am truly happy that they have found "their" happy place. My biggest complaint is when someone posts and you never hear from them again. I am reluctant to answer to a non-registered poster. I can deal with the repeated/mundane questions as long as there is integrety. Rob Hessenius

Again, I agree!

About a year ago, I got into a rather violent discussion with a guy about cockpit drain hoses. After going back and forth, I kept falling victim to his comments about the topic. Phil did remove his post from the board and I commented to Phil (via email) and apologized for "keeping it going". Phil's comment to me was that there are always malcontents who try to start arguments. I fell victim to that, and now, being allowed to stay, stay away from these outbursts. I must say, thanks to all who appreciate a good site and take some criticism regarding their ideas. How else will we learn? Keep it going, Phill. This is the ONLY forum that I frequent!

Thanks to Phil

This was all Phil's brainchild! I am a member of another forum (not boat related) and the moderator is much more agressive at censoring. No bad words (I once wrote "crap" and it got censored) and no brand bashing (as in "I bought Brand X and it was crap"--oops, there's two transgressions in one sentence) and no personal attcks, which is as it should be. My point is that Phil stays hands off until things get out of hand, and I think we all aprecciate that. The other thing about HOW is that I know that friendships have been made, and people help each other here--not just via the internet, I mean that people actually have shown up in person and physically helped people, and the world needs more of that. Thanks Phil (and HOW staff)
