Some years ago as the SCYA Midwinters approached one of our members who sailed a daysailer was getting his "yacht" ready. He kept it in his garage and it was always pristine. He bought new Sampson yachtbraid halyards, Harken Blocks and a bunch of other pricey stuff from a chandlery in MDR we referred to as the Merchant of Venice. He was READY for Saturday. Concurrently he was adding a wing onto his house which we later christened "The Lord Nelson Memorial Auditorium". He arrived home from work on Friday to discover that the contractor had dumped about 10 tons of sand in front of his garage door in readiness for the following Monday.:eek: I signed him on as crew on my boat for the Regatta. Fair Winds...

Hmmmm, what kind of sailor spends money on his house????? Unless, of course, it is an addition for a workshop or boat shed!

It was a game room designed like an Olde English pub. Rum, Argh!!! Money well spent.

Merchant of Venice was Bill Noya of Noya Marine on Lincoln Blvd. I'm not sure if he was in Venice or MDR but the name stuck. He had more stuff in that little building than any chandlery I have ever been in. Sadly, he went belly up. Do you ever get over to Minnies in Newport? Being a desert rat I only get there on rare occasions. Some of the stuff came off of Noah's Ark. Fair winds...

He took it all in stride. Great guy and real gentleman who has since gone to the great regatta. Fair winds...

Oh, yea. Bill Noya was a piece of work, but he sure provided us a needed service. I brought more than a few Tufnol blocks and cleats and lots of other stuff. It was amazing what he had crammed in there. And, yes, I still go by Minneys'. I always find something there.
