Good morning, I was wondering if anyone could tell me about installing an air conditioned unit on my Catalina 25. This would be used mainly at the Marina, and if power is sufficient, on the lake as well during overnight trips. Needless to say, summers in the Las Vegas area are very hot.. I would like to know about the best unit, price expectation, size etc. Thank you and happy sailing!

cooling off

On those hot Carolina nights, we use a window unit that could be purchased at Lowes or Walmart. Ours runs about $85-$100. We put ours in the companionway and have foam insulation that fills in all the cracks. With ours, we can still use the top two hatch boards. Works fine for us. The air unit is a 110.

Off topic, Where in Vegas

Bernard, Off topic, sorry. We also live in vegas and currently have a catalina 22 but we are looking at a catalina 25. Where do you sail? How does a catalina 25 handle lake mead? Geoff

Hi Geoff! We sail our 25 on Lake Mead, very much a pleasure to do so. We have her moored at Lake Mead Marina. Great boat, easy to handle by one person. Should you have any qustion, my email is: <YEEPAKLAP@aol.com> See you around. Bernard

Hatchway AC

Hi, We recently installed a 6000 BTU window unit in our catalina 30 hatchway. Works great. I picked the largest unit I could fit across the hatchway opening. I also purchased plywood to make a cut out for the AC unit which would slide over the top and into the hatchway board slots on either side. Works good. We can still use the top hatchboard to close up the cabin. The only issue is that it gets tough to get in and out stepping over the AC unit. I am next going to make a step along the top of the plywood frame so we can step on it to help getting in and out. I also need to make a drip pan along bottom to keep condensation from dripping into the cabin. I have tilted the AC unit back and drilled a few extra drain holes along the back edge to get the water out of the AC unit quickly and not build up big puddles in the tray. The water then will run along the cockpit floor to the cockpit drains. In the humid climate along the Carolina coast we get alot of water condensation. This system works well for us for very little money invested, < $200 :) Good Luck. Paul

Forward hatch

I was thinking of putting mine window unit at the forward hatch. Make a 3 sided mount that folds up for storge. I was also thinking about making something to fit over the vents on the AC unit and flex duck to the forward hatch leaving the ac unit on the dock
