Can an inverter be used to supply enough power to run the air conditioning unit on the boat and if so, is there an altenator big enough to keep up with the DC demand. I'm looking for the best way to get AC power without putting a gas generator on board.

mostly not..

..Since as much ampers the A/C takes in use , twice than that-or more- it takes at starting..In practice , you won't get abord a 340 such big inverter , nor the battery size for this supply , nor the theoretical alternator size on this boat engine..to keep such battery bank full. You will need a handsome gas generator..

A/C

I am most sure a 340 will require two units as I have on a 450 to do the job properly. You definetly need a generator for one A/C,money dont grow on trees,so do it big???????and see if you can find a tree that does. Battery power will not run A/C.
