a/c & 1/4 berth

I recently bought a 1985 Catalina 30, which I sail on the ocean, and also live on part time. I have lots of questions, but perhaps someone can answer two. What is the best way to stow boxes and other gear in the 1/4 berth, so that they stay put? And, if I buy a portable air conditioner which will fit on a hatch, how and where can I best stow it (on board) so that when I am being pummeled by waves, it doesn't go flying.Any helpful hints would be GREATLY appreciated.

I use the 1/4 berth for storage and sleep in the v-berth. I bought those clear plastic contianers from wal-mart that fit in the low section of my 1/4 berth and store all my clothes and other stuff. They have never fallen out nor has anything else I throw in there. I don't have a/c but I'm sure you could throw that back there also. The containers come in a bunch of sizes. The ones I use are about 17 or 18 inches tall and fit with an inch or two to spare.
