I would like to post my experience with a DIY repair of an Alder/Barbour air-cooled, 12V DC ColdMachine that was working but not cooling effectively. The system came as a factory install on a used 2000 H340 we acquired last fall. This summer was our first with the boat and with refrigeration. The refrigeration unit ran but did not seem to cool very well and the in-box evaporator unit would only frost up some of the time. The thermostat control seemed to work but I had to turn it up all the way. The unit is air cooled, drawing air from the cabin through a system of ducts and a cowl mechanism over the compressor coils. When it was running, there did not seem to be much air flow through the duct. Before calling in an Alder/Barbour technician, I decided to do a little troubleshooting and maintenance. Since the unit was about five years old, I guessed that there might be some dirt and lint on the coils that cool the refrigerant. When I removed the cowling from the cooling coils, I found that a wire to one of the cooling fans was broken and not connected to the fan. This unit has two fans for the cooling coils - one draws air (sucks) and one pushes air (blows) through the coils. It was the blowing fan that was non-functional. It was Sunday morning but I managed to find a local Radio Shack store that had a 4" 12V DC muffin fan in stock. The replacement fan was a little bit thicker than the original but still fit well enough to let me reassemble the cowl over the coils. The coils were pretty clean by the way. The refrigeration unit now cools really well - the evaporator frosts up and it will keep a 5-7 lb bag of ice frozen for the entire week, even in a hot closed-up boat. The difference in the amount of air blowing through the duct system is noticibly increased. The new fan has the same amperage demand as the original. I also managed to get in a good day sailing and had plenty of ice for a tall cold one when I got back to the dock. "Diamonds"
