I'm planning to put 200' of 5/16 BBB chain in the chain locker, and am wondering how much rope to splice to it. Does anyone out there know how much rode can fit into a 410 chain locker without getting a stacking problem? If any other 410s have put that much chain up there, how has the weight effected how the boat goes to weather? I'm hoping that the chain will pull my transom up an inch, as it's starting to submerge when I fill the aft water tank if the diesel is also full. Thanks. S/V Bouyant Redwood City

anchor rode

John I have about 300 feet of rode. 25 ft chain and the balance rope. Its about all the locker will handle without a stacking problem. I would guess you could go longer than 300 feet since the chain probably lies in the locker more compactly than the rope does. Regarding the weight, I had an e-mail from another 410 owner last summer. He had put 300 lbs of weight in the anchor locker and it improved down wind performance. S/V Spellbinder

Forgot to ask is the water at or above the rub rail? I have 1-2 inches of freeboard below the rubrail and I have a 7KW Fischer Panda genset on board in addition to full fuel and water. Bryce S/V Spellbinder

rubrail

With the aft water tank and fuel tank full my rubrail is approximately two centemeters down in the water. This is most probably because Wonderblond keeps 40 pairs of shoes on board, although she claims that the dingy in the lazarette and the 4-stroke outboard on the pushpit have something to do with it. Sheesh. If I had a generator I'm sure I'da sunk by now.

Well at least you've kept your sense of humor about it. I limit my "Wonderblond" to five pairs of shoes, but can't seem to limit any of the other "essentials" needed on board.

anchor rode in 410 locker

John, After I added a 7 kw Northern Lights genset in the starboard lazarette, my 410 settled about 3 inches by the stern. This put my rubrail about 2 inches below waterline and affected sailing characteristics. Greg Emerson at Hunter suggested I add chain in the anchor locker to counterbalance this, which caused my racing buddies to cring and break oujt in a cold sweat! I did add 200 ft of 5/16 BBB to my locker, which brought the stern up about 2 inches. I use the 200 ft. factory braided rode plus 30 ft. of chain for my primary rode and have the other 200 ft of chain as a backup. With all this coiled up in the locker, there's still about a foot of room in the top of the anchor locker (room enough for a 2.5 gallon jerry can of gasoline for the dink). I like keeping the gasoline up there,, as the locker is naturally vented only to the outside forward. The boat is better trimmed with the chain and sails better. By the way, does Wonderblond still get to open the mail at her new job? Lastly, 200 ft of 5/16 BBB weighs 310 lbs. Invite your gorilla friens to help get the shipping barrel out of your vehicle and down the dock. Fair winds! Chris Webb s/v Grand Cru II
