'92 Hunter28 holding tank failure

The original aluminum holding tank on my 1992 Hunter 28 has finally failed. It's leaking from the bottom of the tank. As the tank is bigger than the port or starboard aft lockers, I'm guessing that the tank either has to be cut out, or an access hole cut in the aft bulkhead. With an access hole cut in the bulkhead, I could replace with a similar size tank. Otherwise I guess I'm going to have to install a smaller size holding tank. Any Hunter 28 owners have some experience they'd like to pass along?

Cut an access...welllll...maybe...

If the tank is much further than about 6' from the toilet, you'd be better off finding a new location for the tank. That will prob'ly also mean cutting some access, but trust me..you'll be a lot happier with the system. Give me some details?

Hi Scott, I sold our 1989 H28 before the...

tank failed so take my advice with care. You should be able to remove the plywood bulkhead in the aft cabin rather than cutting a hole in it to remove the old tank. Peggie offers wise advice, but our tank was about six feet from the toilet, so you should be okay. I would replace it with a Ronco plastic tank. You can e-mail them at roncoinc@aol.com to find out whether they already have a tank mold for your boat. I suspect they do, but you need to confirm it. Then just follow their advice. Please let us know the outcome. Terry

Can't remove the whole bulhead . .

Removing the plywood bulkhead, as suggested above, on the 28 is not an option as it is fiberglassed to the hull on the aft side of the bulkhead. As for a new location for the tank, Hunter has it in the right spot, right on the centerline of the boat, and low. Best spot for balance and stability. Any new location would require more extensive re-plumbing, and the possibility of odors being closer to the main cabin. I did find one post in the archives where the old aluminum tank was cut out and replaced by a smaller polyethelene tank. Not a fun job, but possible. I suspect that replacing the old tank with one of a similar size will require the access hole, then some teak trim can be added later to aft bulkhead.

Scott, call Hunter Marine Customer...

Service and ask them the best way to replace the tank. They have been very helpful to me in the past. They may have a better solution. Terry

Cross your legs and wait

Scott, I, also, have a '92 Hunter 28. For now, I run to the public restroom at the marina as soon as we hit the dock, and try to use the head as little as possible. No leaks yet, but I've been worrying about that aluminum holding tank since I got the boat. Please keep me posted. If it happened to you, it will happen to me.

I'm not a big fan of tandemed waste tanks

Tandemed water tanks are ok, but waste presents problems that water doesn't...something flushed that shouldn't have been...sludge...TWO clogged vents. And a few more. Rick, you may be willing to do the extra work required to prevent all those problems, but most people don't even know that ANY work is required to maintain just ONE tank, much less two in tandem. So IMO, he's better off finding a single tank that'll fit, even if he has to pay a bit more to have one custom made.
