9.9 outboard motor

I bought a brand new, out-of-the-box, 9.8 hp Long shaft and it has been a dream. I had a 9.9 Suzuki that was just way too heavy. The 9.8 only weighs about 80lbs so I can lift off the transom myself. It has plenty of power too, pushes my 25' at hull speed. My only complaint is the shift from Fwd -> N -> Rev is pretty rough. It will sometimes slam from Fwd to Rev and if the motor isn't locked down, she jumps.

Boat'n Bus I also experienced the same, until I adjusted the idle down. That is when I discovered that it was set high so as not to stall. Spec's on the 5 Hp said 700 rpm in gear 1100 in neutral. Cleaning out the fuel system allowed to idle a lot slower thus the easier shifting. Is your 9.8 two cylinders? The break in
The problem I had with buying the long shaft is that the dealer didnt have a stand tall enough to set my motor in water to run it for the break in and I fear that I didn't follow the exact procedure for a proper break-in. I have definitely run it over 10hrs now and I think that when I have it serviced I'll have the dude check the idle. Thanks Chuck. Its a two cyl.
