9.9 motor versatility?

I am considering a new 9.9 Nissan 4 stroke for my 1987 Hunter 23. When I move up to a big boat (35-plus), can this motor act as an emergency outboard? If not, what is the smallest size to act in this capacity? Also, anybody have thoughts on the Nissan motors? Thanks in advance! Richard "Invictus"

Should be OK

Nissan motors are pretty solid. A 9.9 should move a 35 around well enough. I use a 3.5 hp or a 5.5 hp on a 26 foot Columbia and either one gets me around just fine

Emergency Outboard?

A larger boat in the 30'+ range usually doesn't have a motor mount for an emergency outboard. But what you might consider is using the outboard on your dinghy that you might plan to tow. I see many out there with a 9.9 (or more) on them, and many with smaller engines. But the last time I purchased a dinghy motor, 5 years ago, I opted to downsize to a 5 hp Nissan. A good towing insurance such as TowBoat/US or SeaTow will provide the emergency towing that you could need. But, also consider that when you sell your h23 that one strong point that the buyer will consider is that if the boat already has an outboard or will he have to spend additional money to buy one. Also consider the currents in L.I. Sound and the CT rivers that you would have to contend with when using an outboard. The 9.9 will suffice for the h23 in those currents or on a dinghy.

15hp?

I dont know Nissan motors, but the johnson/evenrude and merc's are same block (and weight) for 9.9 and 15 hp. (only pistons and carbs change). I would check prices of a 15 hp. it should weight the same, and offer a lot more push for the big boat. -However, I have spun my prop hub, pushing a larger boat w/ a kicker.... But as an emergency, should be fine. -only thing is the support for a kicker bracket... most sterns above water line are very very think. you'll most likley need to add some wood to sport any bracket. (not just the motor wt, but the PUSH it will give). of course you could always tow big boat in in w/ dink.

No transom??

I made it out of an old swim ladder. It required a little bit of reinforcing and modification under the swim platform, but it makes me feel better to know I have an alternate means of propulsion when I go down the Mississippi River. Normally the transom will be stored in the lazarette and the outboard motor will be on the sternrail or the dinghy.

Sounds reasonable,

We use a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke (high thrust) on our C27. Last year we towed another C27 accross the lake and back to it's berth, in rough weather. The tow went so smooth that I frequently had to assure myself that the tow was still attached. Considering the weight of 2 C27's and the added resistance of heading into the wind, I am confident that this motor is up to the task of powering a 35 footer.
