Just bought by 9.2A a couple months ago. It currently has tiller steering. When I look at most 9.2A pictures they almost all have wheel steering. For those with wheel steering, a couple questions:
1. Is the cockpit large enough to utilize wheel steering comfortably?
2. Is there any advantage to converting to wheel steering (about $3000 by my research)?

Thanks for your responses!
Frank

It is fine space-wise. The biggest challenge is the aft traveler leaves a lot of line in the cockpit at times and sometimes it can get caught up on the helm.

I have a bad back and sitting twisted operating a tiller is murder on me. The wheel is much better for it. I thought about doing a wheel upgrade on another boat. It is pretty pricey. I would suggest installing a new fuel tank at the same time, or at least pulling and inspecting/cleaning out the old one to give you room to work.

I agree with Bob (as usual) that the layout is generally fine for wheel steering. I don't think converting to it, though, would be high on my initial to-do list. I'd recommend sailing the boat as-is for this season and then see how you feel. I myself enjoy tiller steering and miss some of that instant feedback you get with it.

But then again, my 9.2A's wheel steering has pretty decent feedback.

Does it currently have an autopilot?

John
PS I've had my S2 out every month so far this winter, a personal goal. Go Hampton Roads!
PPS I saw my first friggin jellyfish this week!

In case you wish to move forward

DR Marine is the only authorized dealer for old stock Edson parts. I'd strongly suggest you call them and tell them what you are doing. When I was looking into this I was able to get the best deal on nearly everything from them.

There may also be a bunch of used stuff on the market after the NJ hurricane.

A pedestal is on ebay too. Looks nice.

This job is pretty labor intensive. Cost to pay someone to do it for your is pretty prohibitive.

Using an emergency tiller with the wheel in place is not practical.

If I had a choice I would rather have a tiller...

(btw, in looking for the parts to use the emergency tiller... The coupling or whatever it is that slips over /onto the top of the rudder post is the big part im looking for. The other parts I can find)
