Hi, there, fellow H28.5 owners! I needed to replace my end caps for the traveller. After 13 yrs they were cracked, split and allowed water to enter the head. I called Schaeffer Marine in New BEdford, MA, and, after 3 tries, FINALLY go the right ones. I literally had to send them one of my old ones for them to match. They have 74-90 and 74-90-1. But, the correct part number is 74-90-0.

Why??????????/

Are you talking about the stops at the end of the trav slide bar?? They cracked?? Wow You need to "load the main" on a jibe to prevent the trav car from slamming the other side...and that assumes that you don't use the line jam to prevent it from sliding all the way out! Load the main means handing in the block lines and cushioning a jibe as the trav swings to the other side. The only part I had to replace in all these years( mine's an 86) is the end pulleys that had the ball bearings crack from UV exposure. Jim McCue

Mine too!

My '88 Legend 37 has the same problem. It is due to weathering and exposure. I spoke to Schaeffer at one of the local boat shows about it. If they don't have the size, they have to custom cut an existing model of stopper.

YEs, Jim, They Cracked/Dried Out

HI, Jim. Yes, I do have the slide protectors, but, as Paul wrote, they got real dried out and slipt. The only "abuse" they ever experienced was the occaisional weight from being stepped on.

Greater problem

More worrisome than the chocks is the fact that the flimsy machine screws (at least on my 29.5) will sheer off under load. Backing down carefully on the traveler may protect the opposite chock, but it does nothing to alleviate the load on the original chock and screw. See my posting 9/17 further down in this column.
