I am very interested in purchasing an 88-94 Hunter 30. I am curious if someone can tell me the difference between the 30t and the 30g? What are the pros and cons of the different models? Is there a year break where the 30g became the 30t? Also thinking about a gennaker, has anyone done this with a 30? Does the 30 have a spinnaker halyard already installed or is this something that has to be added? At the masthead or the top of the forestay? Thanks for any input... John

The mysterious 30G

Search for archives for the article I wrote some time ago about the 30T and 30G. There are only cosmetic differences, in addition to the extendend cabin trunk of the 30T. I wanted a 30T, but ended up with a 30G. Now that I am used to not bumping my head when entering the forward cabin, I'm glad to have a 30G, because I think the lines are far more attractive. We added a Doyle assemetric last year. There is a block above the forestay attachment on the mast, and there was an internal line on our boat, so pulling a halyard through was easy. I purchased the assymetric that preserved the PFHR rating, which means the luff runs to the block mentioned above. If I had it to do again, however, I would buy a sail that went all the way to the masthead, and would install a block near the top of the mast and run the halyard externally, if necessary. I think the assymetric would be more effective downwind with this extra sail area, and with a fractional rig like the 30G/T, the assymetric gets blanketed by the main when running downwind. Hope this helps.

We have a 1993 H30T

We bought After 'Ours three seasons ago. In 1993 Hunter added stern rail seats that are the best seats in the house when you have company. We added a Giniker from Sails East the first year we raced her. Took 5th. in our section and 7th the fleet. Our PHRF for the Great Lakes is 186 with a chute, 155% head sail and a folding prop. We added the Folding prop for the 2005 race season and the 155% head sail. We took 2nd. in our section and 5th. in the fleet. See link below for proof. Play with the tabs at the bottom of the spread sheet. One thing I need to add is, we used to reef between 15 and 20 with the 110% head sail. Now we reef at about 20 to 25 Knots. With little or no weather helm. When we added the 155% it seemed th balance the boat, no more weather helm. I think both the main and the head are of equal Square Feet now. Actualy, 254 Sq. Ft. for the Main and 272 Sq. Ft. for the Head. The Acym. Spinnaker is 521 Sq. Ft. It made the boat very competive to race. To bad we had to move th New Buffalo, MI. for two years while the Hammond Marina closes so the Casino can build a 271,000 Sq. Ft. new Casino boat in the marina. Over 990 boaters had to find new homes for the 2007 season. We left a year early to avoid the rush. Hope this helps you make your decision. Mike Jaeger

G Model

I have a 1990 G model, and while there is some minor differences from the T, like the sink and some cabinetry, the biggest differences that I see is the weight. I have a brochure on both and the weight listed for the G model is 9500 pounds, while the T is listed at 10500. I can't figure out where the added weight is, maybee one of the brochures is wrong.

From A 30T Owner

As owner of a 30T (1991) my comments probably sound bias (and I am) but I like the 30T much more than the 30G. In studying the two models I have the opinion Hunter experimented with different ideas while manufacturing the 30G and finally decided to make what I think were major improvements, renamed it a 30T and thereafter manufactured almost identical boats through the rest of the H-30 run. I have a friend who owns one of the first 30G's produced and in comparing our boats there are in both our opinions measurable improvements on the 30T. I personally like the trunk cabin over the slant cabin top. My friend's 30G has no windows - only several small opening portlights. In looking at 30G photographs notice the various window/portlight configurations. In my opinion the 30T interior cabin has much better woodwork. Just to mention a few changes the galley equipment was improved, the holding tank was moved from inside a head locker, cabin light locations were increased and batteries were placed in a much more convenient location. On deck the mast turning blocks were improved and a much improved bow anchor roller was added. The quality of workmanship on my 30T over my friend's 30G is noticeable. I know there are 30G owners who love their model as much as I do my 30T and I appologize if my remarks offend anyone as that is not my intention. I only want to let people know there are decided differences in the two models which go far beyond the shape of the cabin top which some people think was the only major change. The H-30 is a wonderful boat easily handled by two and the boat is great for cruising.

Thanks for all the info....

Thanks for all the info... The admiral and the mates are in love with the stern rail seats, so it looks like we are going to concentrate on a "T". Has anybody installed an anchor windlass on the 30? I saw a pretty neat install on a 35.5 and aI am curious if anybody has tried it on the the 30.

Look for a 1993 or later H30T

I agree with you on the stern rail seats. I don't beleve Hunter put them on any pre 1993 H30T's. If you find one you have to go to the Chandlery at this site and buy the stern rail seat cushions and backrests. I also take the stern rail seats, bow pulpet seat, and the Helmsman seat home in the off season. I tie up the breakfast table for a few weeks taking the teak off and putting a fresh coat of Sikens on them. If you do this you might want to buy some nylon screws and nuts to slip in the open holes to keep rain water out. See link below for cushions. Good Luck Mike Jaeger
