I am mounting a Edson 7' radar mast on my transom with the pad and backing plate and using the u-bolt bracket to secure the mast to the stern rail near the ladder. When I mounted the mast to the stern rail without even putting the radar and top mount on, the rail kind of flops around when the mast is moved manually. How solid does it have to be? Should I move the mast more to the outside where it may be more stable, or should I tighten the rail bolts and leave it where it is? Fortunately I only drilled one hole for the transom plate so it is not a disaster if I have to move it. Thanks - John

Transom Mount

A friend mounted his radar pole in the area where the life ring was mounted, he removed the horse shoe bracket with a dremel tool, he bolted it directly to the transom and then fastened the pole to the stern rail as an upper mount for the pole, I think he may have had to shim both the bottom and the rail fitting to get the pole vertical. Good luck!

Hunter 34 Radar Mast mount

I did the exact same thing to my 84' 34 and it has worked fine. I mounted the bracket on the port side and lined it up so that the rail arms would attached to the stern rail close to the rail support bar. It did seem a little unstable at first, but it hasn't been a problem. I used two arms from the mast to the railing. I have even used the pole for some support when moving myself around back there without a problem. The railing is stronger than you think. I was thinking of getting larger backing washers for the stern rail for more support but it wasn't neccesary. Good luck.
