My recently acquired '81 Cherubini H36 came with Datamarine depth and speed transducers. The depth gauge display is shot and I have no idea if either works (I have a brand new replacement speed transducer if anyone is interested).
I plan on installing the Garmin 740s chartplotter from my previous boat with which I used a 'shoot thru hull' P79 depth transducer which worked very well.
I am trying to decide what type of depth transducer to install and where to install it. My debate is between a depth-speed-temp DST 800 (conventional thru hull) or another P79.
If I use the DST 800 I would want to reuse the 2.125" dia hole from the Datamarine speed transducer since I don't want to cut any more holes in the hull (Can I install the new 2" diameter thruhull in the old 2.125" dia hole using sealant only, ie no fiberglass work?). However the location is not great as I see it being just aft of the head and thus beside the keel.
I am leaning more toward the P79 as I am not so concerned about speed through the water and have read concerns about the valve on the DST 800 failing very quickly. However I am not sure re location. Ideally having it close to centerline in the bottom of one of the v-berth lockers looks great but I am concerned that there may be just too much solid fiberglass there to shoot through particularly on centerline.
I'd much appreciate any experiences and/or thoughts.
Many thanks in advance.
