RE: ...There is a streak in the top washboard and no matter how much I sanded or oiled it that streak would not disappear...

I don't see any "streak" on the top washboard. What kind of wood did you use for the washboard ? From the picture, it looks to me that it MAY be a birch ply. If so, it will have variances in the uptake of the oil. I take it that you used some type of tung oil ?

Yes, Minwax tung oil. The streak is towards the left side (about 1/4 of the way from the edge) of the top washboard, near the bottom. It's a vertical streak that extends about halfway up the board. I'm not sure what's causing it but it won't go away. Something got on the wood once there and permanently stained it.

The washboards are the original that came with the boat and I'm sure they're birch plywood.

OK, I now see the streak @ lower left of upper board... being birch ply, it may be a compression area where a board or something heavy was dragged across it. A compression area will absorb less of the stain. One way to detect the compression is to run your finger nail over the area to detect any depressions. Also note, if the area was recently sanded, as you may have, you will not feel a depression, yet the compression of the wood fibers is still there from the previous impact. Otherwise my guess is that it's a remnant glue streak.

Most probably it's a compression area.

In either case, localized (i.e., hand) sanding of the areas, or some part of the area (for testing), and then reapplying the Minwax may yield more desirable results in color.

I didn't know that Minwax made a tung oil / stain combination. I know they have a large color selection of stain-only product. I am familiar with Watco's tung oil / stain product which soaks in, stains and seals (after wiping off the exccess). It is NOT a polyurethane, which is a finish applied AFTER the stain has been applied and dried. There are numerous advantages to the use of tung oil, BUT it has some DISadvantages in the marine environment.

The Minwax that I'm familiar with is either oil-based stain only, or polyurethane infused with stain ("one step application").

Hi SeaTR,

I hesitate to post links to products but I don't know how else to show what I used on the wood:
http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/specialty-products/minwax-tung-oil-finish

All of the teak turned out beautifully. I can't really feel a depression in that top washboard like a compression damage. I suspect it is some sort of glue or other thing that got into the wood fibers at one point. It's not a big deal as it's hardly noticeable, but it is there. After I get the rest of the boat done I'll try some other things to see if I can fix that defect.

Hi SeaTR

Yep, got it at the local Menards. You can tell that the teak really likes it. The teak was dry. I kept applying it with a cloth and the teak kept soaking it up and it took about 5 coats before the teak stopped almost immediately soaking it in. After I could keep the teak wet with it I let the final coat dry and the teak now looks and feels like teak again. It does kind of stain the wood and make it darker. But I like that darker finish anyway. All the teak turned out really nice, including our table in the cockpit (something every boat should have).

I am working on all the little details like fishing rod holders, boarding ladder, etc.. I am putting new lifelines on the boat and when I order the new ones I am going to put a lifeline gate on the port side where the boarding ladder is. It was always a pain to crawl over the lifeline there.

She looks nice! We loved our 22. We went everywhere in her and learned the joys of sailing. Broke our heart to sell her.

The original H22 is the sweetest sailing weekender ever built in my opinion. We learned to sail with ours too. We recently bought a Legend 37 that I'm refitting for blue water. That boat is going down the river system to the Gulf for winter cruising in the Caribbean when I get her done. She is leaving Lake Superior for the Gulf this coming summer, and we're going to take a month off in August to sail her to New Orleans (what a pain because the mast has to be unstepped for part of that voyage). Then haul her out and have her stored on the hard until we go cruising next winter.

But there is no way we will sell our H22. My wife LOVES this boat (it is named after her) and she can single hand it with no problem at all. We've cruised clear to Chicago on the southern tip of Lake Michigan with her, and back. That's why I'm restoring her. She is going to stay on Lake Superior for summer time cruising around the Apostle Islands and the North Shore. For what we could sell her for, we could never replace her.

We now have a pretty much brand new Hunter 22 after several weeks of work. But the Yachtwin was looking a little ragged. These are one of the best outboards for sailboats ever devised by man and the battery charger even works in this one. So can't put it back on the boat looking like this

She runs beautiful but the water pump was a little weak so I put new pump in her. She pees with authority now, even at dead idle. Then decided it needs to be color matched to the boat trim. Can't get the decals for it from OMC anymore. Actually, it's not OMC since they went belly up and got bought by Bombardier or Genmar, or whatever it is. Don't make any difference - to us old timers that grew up with these motors since we were old enough to twist the throttle it's always going to be OMC.

Anyway, had to have the decals custom made for it.
