Not much that you can really do...
as 6.5 HP isn't much for a 27foot boat. A 15hp outboard would be the cheapest way to go faster.

Try a three blade prop
Put a three blade prop on my 2qm15 Yanmar pushing a 33. It was a smaller prop size and pitch than the old two blade it replaced. Gave the boat much more power and speed. If you can find a good used prop at a decent price this might be a reasonable answer for you. Years ago we pushed a heavy Endeavor 26 with a 2 cyl. 6 hp outboard and it worked well. 27ft outboard??
I am considering purchasing a 27ft Hunter. The current owner says the engine does not work and has not for a while. Would it be less expensive to have it overhauled or just buy an outboard? If so, from what I read here I should buy something at least 7-10hp. Obviously, add a motor mount as well. It this easy??

If you have an inboard diesel rather than add a gas out board. I had a 28' w/a long shaft out board. It was a nightmare. A person in our sail club had a 27 Hunter w/a 1GM & had it converted to a 2 GM. Look into that.

Mike - not a big deal to add an outboard
It's pretty easy to add a mount to the stern, and there is plenty of strength but you would want to add some backing plates.
If the 27 you are looking at has the Renault diesel, depending on what is wrong with it overhauling may not be a viable option. Parts are scarce to non-existant. There's a place in England that carries some stuff. If it has something else like a Yanmar you may be able to find everything you need. Other forum members here could probably give you better input on different engines. An outboard may be the least expensive option, especially if you buy a decent one that is used - check Craigslist or Ebay. You also do not want to skimp on the motor mount.
I have a Honda 8 hp on mine and it is plenty of power, you don't need more than 10 hp. I always get comments when I take someone out sailing how well the little outboard moves the boat.
