On my boat I can't see the cable. When I bought the boat the previous owner told me never crank it past 50 cranks. So when I had it on the crane I actually cranked it down 50 cranks and noticed it wasn't all the way down. My boat takes 66 cranks to fully lower the centerboard. You're boat may be different. So I count which is a pain but it works. I need to install a stop so my cable can't accidentally come off the crank.
I think some kind of motor could be installed with a simple electronic switch that turns off at a specific time could be nice.
Thanks - we just had an issue, where I cranked (and kept cranking) the wrong way when I thought I was raising it. I knew something was wrong so I had my husband check. He then cranked up and the cable got wrapped around the centerboard while down and got stuck.
He was luckily able to undo it without hauling the boat out. but he's now shortening the cable and crimping it so that can't happen again. Why is the cable that long to begin with?? Where we sail, we really don't need it down more than a foot anyway.
Thanks for your response!
