I have a 79 ODay 23, need some assistance with wiring.
PO removed the breaker panel, left wires un-marked.
This is what I have been able to determine...
Red - power
White - ground
Orange - cabin lights
Blue - nav. lights [front & rear]
White/White - mast work light
White/White - anchor light
Black - ???? [runs down port side from panel]
Brown - ???? [runs down starboard side from panel]

The White/White mast light cords don't appear to be much more than lamp
cord.

Bilge pump has it's own wiring direct to panel.

Anyone have any idea what the purpose of the Black and Brown lines?

Any help would be appreciated.
Ron

I have a '79 Oday 23 as well, and all of the wiring in my boat is red and black. I don't think the PO of my boat ever touched the original wiring (although he did add a couple of things). Either Oday wasn't consistent in their wiring color scheme from boat to boat, or your PO made some significant changes. Or maybe my PO. Either way, I'm no help. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the message. The wiring is bundled down the port and starboard sides, I would guess and say its original. I've seen what the PO added and it would never be mistaken as original. The control panel, found in a box of parts was not original and I was able to match wire ends with some success in identifying what's what. Thanks again.

if your battery is located under port side cockpit bench seat - black wire could be the original common ground.
the brown wire on starboard might be used for the water pump for the sink.
good luck!

She without a sink on starboard side, probably removed by PO when the tank was removed. I thought the brown may have been to the bilge pump but a water tank pump makes more sense.
Thanks for the response.

I do not have an electric bilge in mine, but looked at mine this a.m. Brown is for water pump on mine as well. Putting "North Winds" away for season. Another sad day in north country. If you are still checking here, I will be working on her most of day, will check here periodically through the day. Feel free to ask, love talking boats. Bob

Ok, water pump uses brown. My ground is white, do you have a black running down the port side?
I'm still in the water, will need to pull out by the end of the month.
Thanks for confirming the brown.

Just checked, black is running to fuse panel( on port side) and ends there. There are circuits for light in v-berth and above star-board settee. Zero wires toward bow on port side. As I said earlier, I do not have electric bilge pump, so perhaps that? Let me know if I can help anymore. Bob

My nav lights are blue/white(run down port side) and interior lights are orange and white.
Black May have been the original mast lights(?) but appears to be abandoned. All aux run individually back to panel.

Thanks for your info, it helped.

if the black wire is of a larger guage than the misc. wires in the panel, I am pretty sure it was the original ground for the whole panel (runs back to battery). Does this seem right?

That sounds like that would make sense. Main ground should be fairly heavy, being direct from battery and also carry what-ever load you would add on also.

VHF on separate wiring. I've abandoned the black, don't know where it terminates. Maybe someday the end will be exposed. Thanks for the response.
