Ericson 29 Southport..
I'm looking seriously at an Ericson on the hard, I can get it to suit my financial arrangements, but I'm stymied a little. The owner calls it a 29+, (whatever the plus is supposed to mean). It's supposed to be a 1973 model, and that's really all I seem to know about it. The guy said this boat was produced/owned by Boston Whaler at one time, but I find no evidence of this. Can anyone give me any insight into this? Decent boat overall? I can repair its obvious difficulties, but I want to see if anybody tells me h...no. I'm basically going to pay his rental fee to get it off the yard, he has two new small kids, etc., sail no more...
So ?

I believe the plus means it was designed to be primarily a racing boat rather than the cruising version. I'm familiar with the mid-80's Ericson 36 and it is a beautiful boat that sails very well.

Good fiction reading can often be found in ads for boats (and vehicles, planes, horses, dogs, etc...). ;)
There is no such model. A '73 E-29 might have come with two different rig heights, but that's about it.

The original owner could have been employed by Boston Whaler, but that tells you nothing about the boat, either. Boston Whaler never built an Ericson.

Basically a well-designed sail boat from a quality builder. After all these decades only your surveyor can tell you what it's needs are, though.

As others point out, best place to ask for details on the E-29 is at the owners' site, www.ericsonyachts.org.
There are quite a few sistership owners there as well as a lot of owners of similar-size Ericsons with the same construction from that era.

I owned a 29 tall rig from 78 thru 84. it was a great boat, very roomy below. We raced it PHRF and cruised all around New England. It seem to do everything pretty well.
Good Luck

I am familiar with the 29 from the 70s knowing 4 owners. It is a well built boat and none of these owners have had serious problems. Having helmed the boat several times, I find it a so so sailing boat. Not bad, but I have helmed many other boats that handle better. They are a bit squirrly, in my opinion.

Ericson 29 comments

A friend of mine had a 70`s Ericson 29 We raced it PHRF in the 80`s It was a good fast
well built boat phrf rating was around 200 Make sure you get a survey a boat nearing 40 years old could have some structural issues.

good luck
