I am shopping for a vertical windlass in the 500W range and many of them list the windlass as 6mm DIN 776. 6mm = 0.2362". Will a 1/4" G4 or BBB chain fit these gypsies?

Our gypsy is 10mm which our manual says should use DIN 766 / ISO / G4, but the dealer gave us BBB chain. For the first year or two we had some occasional interference between the two.

We were talking to the dealer about having the gypsy replaced, but before we really pushed for that the problems stopped being an issue. I presume the chain or gypsy wore just enough that they conform fine now.

Hayden, I am surprised that you are not getting a lot of traffic on your post so I will wade in here. If nothing else it will bring the thread to the top again.

At the bottom of most suppliers of anchor chain there is a note that says to the affect:
"Note: Check fit for windlass manufacturer's specifications before purchase."

I would expect that there are tolerances in both the chain links and gypsy cogs. The dimensions of interest to the gypsy cog are the link inside length and width and not necessarily the diameter (ie 1/4" or 6mm). However they are somewhat related. G4 links inside dimensions are different than BBB links even for the same chain diameter. Here is link to a discussion that touches on link dimensions.
The Difference Between HT Chain and BBB/Proof Coil Chain

HT (G43) chain seems to be less costly than BBB and by most accounts that I have read is far superior in strength. However, I would recommend that you contact the manufacturer(s) to determine if HT chain will fit in their gypsies and which diameter they recommend 1/4" or 6mm. Wearing the cogs or links in to fit in the future may not be optimum.

Details of their units are found in the catalog.
I suspect Maxwell and others have the same data available.

When I bought my Lofrans it didn’t come with the right Gypsy from the factory but the Vancouver supplier sent the Gypsy to match my chain at no charge if I sent the non- fitting one back. My only cost was I had to change the Gypsy. Easy Peasy as they say.
