Hi,
I am looking to purchase a Evasion 37 DL, how does she sail, what is your general feeling with her??
What windforce does she need to get at 5.5-6 kts? Does she go windward at all?
I have no ambisions to cross the Pacific, but what do I have to expect at bad weather?
Thanks in advance,
Plamen
Dear Plamen,
First of all: I am not that experienced with this ship, as I am a quite new co-owner of this ketch; having said this, these are my experiences:
General Feeling: yes, this is not a racer, but a really reliable cruiser. It has no intention to stomp an keeps the course (good trim provided ...)
Windforce to get 5-6 kts: depends on the sailing location and the conditions of the sea.: we are located in Croatia - Kvarner Bay (Island CRES); May, June & September, October always good wind available ("Bora").
The hull speed is calculated approximately as the square root of the waterline length of the vessel in meters multiplied by the factor 2,43 (=knots). The waterline of this ship is 10,5 m, so the hull speed results in approx. 7,8 knots (max).
In addition, you have to take in consideration your tonnage: water, diesel, equipment, crew .... and the condition of your hull ("vegetation" ...)
With respect to all these variables, you can not expect a correct answer, but as a general rule:
3 bft: use your engine or have a lot of time
4 bft. quite fair, but no satisfaction
5 bft: best practice
6 bft: best practice & fun for experienced sailors
7 bft: too much for leisure sailors, even experienced
8 bft: hope, you are moored
8+ bft: The construction itself allows more than the crew ... (Unrig, jocks tight and hope of weathering)
Windward:
Fock & Besan without mainsail: no
Mainsail only: yes
Due to the fact, that this is a ketch, the point of angle is not midship, as the mast of the mainsail is not midship. Keep trimmed, and you will have no problems.
What to expect in bad weather:
You can definitely trust this construction. Unrigged, the engine is strong enough to strike the waves (provided, you have the 60 HP equipment).
Hope, this helps,
brgds
Klaus
