Am looking to purchase a Pearson 30 wanderer hull number 123. She has been at rest for 6 years with battery out. Question is this. What is the possibility that the gas engine could be salvaged, and what condition will the hull be in. The boat has been in NC coastal water.

I can't speak to the engine but in all likelihood it's dangerous to have aboard. Its just not worth having an inboard gas engine in my opinion. My wanderer (#23) has been blister free since 1986. Even then it was a small one. The lay up is heavy. It's a solidly built boat. Plan on inspecting the centerboard and replacing the pendant.

I wouldn't trash the gas engine until I knew for sure it couldn't be saved, especially if it's fresh water cooled. I don't plan on getting rid of my Atomic Four. Apart from that, I agree with what Tmy47 said, especially replacing the centerboard pendant. It's very easy to do if it hasn't broken but it's a real pain to replace if it does.

The boat sails well, has a nice comfortable motion under way and is surprisingly fast. I also like the standing headroom (I'm over 6 ft tall). I think it's a great boat.

No need to replace the Atomic 4, necessarily. Refitting with a diesel will be expensive.

I would head over to the Moyer Marine site for advice on how to recommission an A4 that's been idle for six years. Don Moyer is the A4 guy, his store is where you'll find all the replacement and upgrade parts you could ever need, and the Moyer forums are where you'll find the most A4 knowledge.

The A4 is a very reliable engine. Yes, a gasoline engine is more dangerous than a diesel, but they're fine if maintained and operated properly, IMO.

Save the A-4. There has never been a fire caused by one on a sailboat. I'ved owned my Wanderer, hull 112, for 26 years and love it.
