Yesterday was one of those Maine fall days you wait all year for. We flew just the 150% and sailed a three hour beam reach consistently over 6 knots. Sky's were that bright blue you only see on a New England dry fall day. The winds winds were brisk but also consistent. An amazing day..

At 10:00 pm last night the stars literally extended all the way to the horizon and the Milky Way was clear and obvious.. Truly amazing...

Of course this morning we awoke to 44F and pea soup fog. As they say in Maine, "Don't like the weather just wait a minute.":)

Had the same best last day of the season sail yesterday. Wind was a steady 10-12 knts, boat was consistant 6+ knts and my auto tiller was working perfect. Nice 2'-3' gental swell. Temp in the mid 70's and no clouds. A glass of JD, a good book and loved every minute. Unfortunately I have to de-rig the boat today as the boat compound shuts down tomorrow for the winter. A good high yesterday and depressed today.

MS,

You're KILLING ME!!!!!

We wanted to go out but couldn't due to all the stuff we've put off because of sailing all summer. Just twist the knife and finish me off!

Well ok....Right now the fog has that mythical feel, beautiful but mysterious. I am sitting in the cockpit to a gentle rocking and flat glass calm. My wife and daughter are below, enjoying the cabin heat. My daughter is watching ET while I get to whiff the bacon, toast and sausage smells from a Lodge cast iron skillet my wife is cooking in... All this while sipping hot Sumatra bean coffee and watching a seal watch us....;)

Without a doubt, this is the best time of year for sailing in the NE!

Yep had a great day also, hitting 7 knots coming up Quohog bay from Ragged Island with less than 15 knots of wind. A fabulous sunset and some nice early foliage while on anchor at Big Hen Island.

Hall Pass!!

Dropped my wife and daughter off at noon and got a one night hall pass..... Was back to the boat in 30 minutes.. Meeting a buddy tonight out on one of the islands for good food, drink and pure fall bliss....

Sailing along on AP, tweaking sails and cranking Greensky Bluegrass....... Ahhhhh fall.......:D

Nice....
My boat was hauled out and is under canvas for the winter and has been since the first week of September. Lots of possible nice sailing days on Lake Michigan in September and October, but lots of possible lousy weather too. Anyway, the better half wanted to get back to Virginia for the winter already. Guess I will need to find somebody to sail with in the lower Chesapeake Bay.

Piling on Don, great dinner run Friday night, good afternoon out today with a grandson(after he scrubbed the boat:D), made him leave his phone in the truck, we listened to the Ravens collapse on the boombox while sailing. Great weekend!!

Maine,
If you leave now you can be in Manteo by next Friday in time for the Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival. Three day affair and bring your instruments, there are jam sessions all over the place. Starts at 11 am on Friday, just take a straight shot down to Norfolk then the Virginia cut through Coinjock down the Albemarle and over to Manteo.

Sept/Oct/Fall sailing in the North-East is highly under-rated. I keep asking myself why I push so hard to get my trips in during the sweltering humidity in July-August when the Fall is so much more comfortable...

Awesome weekend.

We had a great sail on Saturday. One tack all the way to Chandler's Cove averaging 6 knots and then one tack back to Portland through Diamond Roads. We had 5 guests aboard including my parents and their neighbors. Then a great seafood dinner at Boones.

Up early Sunday to go mountain biking and then a wedding in the western mountains that afternoon with the leaves changing.

We topped it all off by watching the Patriots win last night.

Me? I was getting ready for the white squalls that are sure to follow. Loaded wood pellets into the basement. Just two more tons to go. Mowed the lawn, got the Ariens out and started. Pulled the frame for Sparrow behind the deck, getting ready for the long, cold sleep. They say to watch where the hornets are nesting. High means a deep winter. They were going onto the eve of my house, 12' up. We're in trouble.
