5411 oil pan leak

I have just changed the oil in my 1979 30' Catalina with the 5411 deisel, I used a suction device and I think that where the tube goes down the oil dip stick has punctured the oil pan. After a few days when I started the motor the oil buzzer was coming on at idle, I checked the oil and it was low, upon further investigation it was leaking thru the oil pan by the oil dip stick tube!!:=(. I was told that water in the bilge eats the oil pan and makes it weak and suseptable to leaking. Has anybody run into this? Is the pan worth fixing or do I look for a replacement engine? is there an outlet for new 5411 motors and or parts?? I do not know if the motor has been rebuilt or the history of the motor but it seams to be in good condition, (we just went 172 miles on a trip to Catalina and back under power and no problems (thank God). Any advice will be graty appriciated as I will start pulling the moter in the next week or so.

5411 oil pan

Jim; I used to have an '82 C30 with a 5411. If you can get a new pan, remove the old one, (difficult but possible, unless you raise the engine about a foot), and have it tig welded, paint it good, and re-install it, careful of the gasket. I wouldn't worry about rebuilding the engine if it's running well.

Happened to me (sorta)

It turns out that the sharp bend in the dipstick tube before entering the block enticed an oil leak on my boat. At first I thought it was the pan, but upon cleanup & further inspection it was the end of the dipstick tube. I drained the oil, cleaned & burnished the area (you have to use a mirror to see the problem area). Then applied "liquid weld" or something like that. I'd check that before going to the trouble of removing the pan. Good luck & let us know!
