Trying to replace impeller on raw water pump on Universal 5411 (first timer). Having trouble getting the key to stay in place as new impeller goes in. Key is half round... round side toward the shaft, correct? Flat side toward the impeller. The slot doesn't come out to the end of the shaft, so key needs to be set in keyway before inserting new impeller, and the key keeps getting pushed back.

What's the trick for this? Thought of gluing the key in place with low-strength Locktite, but not sure I want to try that yet.

Thanks for any help with this. This is my first post on this forum.

The pump type would eb a great help for us

to help you. What is the manufacturer of the pump?

If you're talking about the slip ring on the impeller shaft, I use two small flat bladed screwdrivers to take it off. To reinstall, get one side in and then push the other around until it clips in.

Mainse Sail did a rw pump rebuild article, here: http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=106156

Other than that, can you be more specific?

Thanks Stu. That snap right holding the impeller on was a pain to get off, but we got through that. I'm talking about a key that fits in a milled slot in the shaft and the impeller-- it locks the impeller to the shaft and keeps it from spinning.

Sorry-- not sure what brand of pump it is. There are a couple of spare impellers on the boat when we bought it. It's the orig engine I believe, and this is a 1982 Cat 27.

Someone suggested gluing down the key with a drop silicone and letting that set up. That's pretty close to my Locktite idea.

It's A Sherwood Pump And A Real Pain. I've Had Luck Putting A Bunch Of Grease On The Slot, Placing The Key In The Grease Then Gently Sliding On The Impeller. Also If Yoiu Will Mark The End Of The Pump Shaft Where The Key Is Located It Helps. Just Use A Pencil.
