Dan, I try to get out to Frenchy's cove at Anacapa about once a month with other members of my club. We generally drop a lunch hook for about an hour then head back. If you are planning on going to Anacapa soon and want to join up with us, let me know. Never tried the "breakfast house" and am not familiar with it.

Lee shore

At the beginning of our love triangle, me, her, and the boat, i tried letting her steer. I was stupid, really stupid. It was really light conditions, just ghosting along fine. So i decide to get something out of the cuddy, takes longer than i thought and i forget about it when i hear "DAN". Now we are 15 feet and closing to docks on our leeward beam with gusting wind. Not just any docks, Coast Guard inspection docks on North Island Navy Base at the entrance to San Diego Harbor. Think prison time. We had been waiting for a cruise ship to go by so were staying out of the channel. Fortunately for us, but not the hull, there are some barnacle encrusted logs chained so we couldn't go under the docks. What a mess trying to find boat hooks, paddles to push off, trying to get an old motor to start. Fortunately, all the witnesses were going out of the country for 7 days of lesser entertainment, and we were long gone with hull scars. I have such a fabulous wife that she still goes out every time with me. She has steered since then, but would rather adjust the jib sheets. We will both be going to sailing school for dummies, probably in the SF Bay on a calm day.

I am very lucky with my wife

She has a real love of sailing... But we went sailing on one of our first dates. She really impressed me on that date. My old bucaneer 18 had a homemade roller furler and when it failed to roll up the sail she climbed out there and rolled it up by hand. This was in conditions of gusty winds. A few years ago I was standing on shore looking at Mobile Bay covered by whitecaps. She asked me if we were dock sitters or sailers. When I said sailers she said well let's go sailing. If she hadn't goaded me I would have een a dock sitter that day. We had a great day of exciting sailing even with a reefed main and sometimes no jib!!! Mobile bay can get very rough with a south or north wind. 12' deep and 30 miles or so of fetch. Letting the women take the helm even in rough conditions teaches confidence. Just get out in open water and even if they get knocked around let them keep the helm and learn. The first few times she would yell for help when hit with a gust. But after a while she learned to head up a little and keep on sailing. She still yells but knows that I won't help her unless things are really getting out of hand. Even getting knocked down teaches the women that the boat WILL stand back up.

Tom - Sounds like you have quite a gal.

I just finished reading the first part a Seafaring Trilogy, by Hal Roth. Your wife would probably enjoy reading about his wife Margaret, who pilots the boat through squalls, gales, and 20 foot seas while he sleeps in the cabin below. She's quite a remarkable lady and my hat is off to her and yours.
