Compression?

Have you check the compression? That would account for all of the problems you have encountered. A lack of compression could be serious problems or more likely a little carbon or gum on the reed valves or a spark plug with a bad washer or a little loose.

Re-build The Carbeurator

I have ordered a carbeurator rebuild kit ($25 + $3 shipping). From numerous sources this is an easy one hour (more like 3 for me) effort. As posted earlier, with gas pouring out of the top of the carbeurator, this is at least part of my problem. I had to order it, so I will post as soon as it comes in and I see if this solves the problem. Thanks everyone again for all the online support!

Good idea

A sticking float or bad needle or seat would cause the symptoms you described.
