On Sunday, I'm leaving early in the morning with wife and 4 yr old for a 5hr sail to Somers Cove marina in Crisfield Md. They are hosting Freedom Fest with food, beverages, bands and kids activities. Then at 9 fireworks on the water. I have a slip reserved and I think a few from our club are going also. This is my first overnight on my Oday 28 and am hoping the forecasted cooler weather stays for family's sake.
Whats everyone else got planned?

I'm green with envy

Wish I could participate in something on the fourth, other than boat work. Of course when I finally get it all finished, don't know where I can sail. Too many conflicting reports on the oil spill to make any kind of plans.

Our yacht club has a big party. We will take some old salts out to fill the sails. Some of our members still love to sail, but will not do it on their own or on their own boat. We have quite a few boats in the yard from members that will not sail, but the boats hold too many memories for them to get rid of them.

Depending on thunderstorms, I plan to anchor out by our state park and enjoy the fireworks from the Mandeville Seafood Festival, It is a 25 minute motor from my slip. When the weather is clear, we can see fireworks at New Orleans (25 miles across Lake Pontchartrain), and Slidell (18 miles) in addition to the local display.

Sounds like fun. I'll be overnighting in the islands... of Lake Erie. A night at Kellys and a couple at Rattlesnake next week. The weekend will hold plenty of club events and fireworks over Cedar Point. I hope the weather turns out better than forecasted.

Our idea of fun has changed through the years. No longer do we enjoy a jam packed marina full of revellers so we plan our overnight excursions for those weeks after or before major holidays. For the 4th we will probably take the boat out across the Bay to watch the fireworks in St Petersburg. Some sun-downers, a prepared dinner, a couple of bottles of wine with the company of some friends is all we want. We'll be home by 12:30 AM for a good night sleep with the A/C set at 72F.

We'll be sailing on the 4th - no special events where we launch, though. I'm performing twice on the 3rd on different ends of the 'garden state' and have the 4th off for a little sailin', a little bar-b-quein'.
A few years ago we were in Punta Gorda for the 4th, but I couldn't convince the Admiral and kid to anchor in the Peace river for the fireworks display though we were in a pretty comfy room for a bird's eye view of it.;)

None None None
We'll be on Cave Run Lake (KY) watching fireworks. I've sailed to Crisfield many times and it's one of my favorite towns to visit. The marina is great (use the showers with the shower head flush with the wall... best water pressure in the world!). I always felt like I was entering a Norman Rockwell painting when I entered Somers Cove Marina. Have fun!

Bill, Somers Cove does seem like the cleanest marina I have seen. We drive down to eat in a restuarant there, not for the entree's but the sweet potato muffins.

I'm going out Saturday, maybe Friday, to the Annapolis harbor to watch the floating circus and the fireworks from the barge in the harbor.

Sunday is forecast to be nearly 100 degrees and every powerboater on the river will be out driving fast and drinking hard trying to keep cool. I will keep the boat in the slip and maybe go sailing on Tuesday when most people have gone back to work.

Off form Mystic to Newport early tomorrow. Looks like bad current and fair winds. Staying in Newport or over at Connanicut thru the 3rd. (Seeing Boz Scaggs at the yachting ctr on 4/2). Then off towards Buzzards Bay, the canal and up thru Mass stopping at Plymouth, Boston and/or Marblehead and perhaps into Maine for a couple of weeks or so. No fixed agenda for a change. Taking advantage of this rotten economy to actually get some cruising in during the Summer.

Will be sailing on the Barnegat Bay Fri-Mon with an achorage for fireworks off of Bay Beach (Beach Haven on LBI). The admiral has the sched., I just keep us pointed in the right direction. Should be a glorious weekend as the weather forcast looks great. Hope the greenhead flies aren't too bad.

1) Hoping to safely avoid the motorboaters who WILL blindly back off the boat ramp into my path in the very narrow channel that runs from my marina to the open bay, as though it's my responsibility to stop on a dime. They will stare at me blankly when I blast my horn or yell to them a warning imploring simple courtesy or specific regulations. 2) Hoping to find some open water to thread the needle between those who are fishing, swimming, and skiing ... or worse, showing off under motor.

Around here, this is typically the most crowded weekend of the summer by far. The many 4th of July guys who know and care the least about what they're doing (and who are usually driving the boats that can cause the most harm) challenge my skippering more than any weather ever has. I'm not sure which is worse- the guy who is showing off, or the one who is absolutely oblivious. It will probably be the worst sailing of the season, but we'll make the best of it, knowing it's nautical miles better than the alternative.

I'll get out for a few day trips, and maybe an overnight anchor... we're playing it by ear. Happy 4th everyone!

A friends boat was struck by lightening and he is giving me his reservation at Fisherman's Village MArina in Punta Gorda. Will party from the safety of the boat slip and enjoy a nice dinner with friends at a restaurant followed by the city Fireworks. Looks like rain though.
