When running my Yanmar 4JH3E (2000 year), is it possible that the electric fuel cutoff solenoid could fail closed (open?) and cut the fuel off causing the motor to stop? my understanding is that the solenoid must be energized to retract the fuel cutoff valve and should be fail safe to keep fuel flowing. Thoughts?

I have an 06 3YM30 and that is how my fuel solenoid works. Since it requires electric power to activate the solenoid it would have to short positive to keep it engaged, thus cutting off the fuel. I have an engine compartment fire extinguisher that is controlled by an instrument panel warning. It has a bypass switch. If the pressure in the fire extinguisher is low it will shut the engine down or not let it start. I assume that it activates the shutdown solenoid. If you have this device I would suggest to check it out.

That’s the way mine works too(Perkins 4-108) however it is powered on ( fuel off) but spring returned. I’ve had the spring break and that took me a couple of hours and a great deal of frustration to find.
