I have a 4JHTB and lately the transmission occasionally does not go into gear when shifted (1 of 10). The gearbox sounds like it is rumbling? This first appeared in reverse but the last week it has also happened in forward. The linkage and wire look fine in both the pedestal and motor compartment and do not appear to have slipped. The oil is this seasons and level ok. I am not sure where to look to check the problem. Any suggestions.

4JHTB shifting

The B on your engine number indicates that you have the KM4A reversing gear, with the down-angle output shaft. This is a cone type, mechanically operated clutch. We have come across many of these gears that have wear on the shifting cone. This requires complete disassembly and replacement of at least the cone. But first, assure that the shifting is happening properly. The shift lever should move freely and the shift cable should make the full stroke required for a complete shift. The shift lever on the gear should be perpendicular to the shift cable when in neutral. There is a bolt screwed into the end of the shifter shaft. It must be tight. The oil in the gear case should be engine oil, at the proper level. Hopefully your problem is in the adjustments.
