470 drainage problem

I'll start by admitting that this is a small problem. But it is becoming a pest. I've owned a 470 for about 6 months. Ever since I got it I've had a problem with the fact that water which gets on the deck does not drain back properly. It is apparently designed to drain straight off the back. Instead it ponds along the sides next to the toe rail ... with the center of the pond being at about the middle of the cockpit. This happens on both sides of the boat and it is at least a half inch deep. Needless to say lots of dirt and junk builds up there. Is anyone else having this problem. I guess I will cut a drainage slot in the bottom of the toe rail, but wondered if anyone else had any suggestions. I suppose I could actually just install two drains. Thanks, Dave.

Drainage

Dave, I can't help with your problem...my 470 won't be delivered for another couple of weeks. There's another site that you may want to post your message. Try sailnet.com. They have a special e-mail board for each model and a general message board for all Catalinas. Try the c-470 board. Goodluck, Bill

I feel your pain

I found the hole in the toe rail which is at the deepest point in the "pond" and filed it down flush with the bottom of the toe rail on each side. This greatly reduced the standing water and the streaks that ran down the hull in the area of the puddle. Now I just have one streak to clean and I'm much happier. Would be nice if the sheer had continued down and aft so everything just slid off the stern. But you're right, it's a small problem. I still dig the boat. Claude McKernan #049 Willow Street

Response to Claude

Thanks Claude. I think that is what I will do. By the way, I agree with your comment about the boat. In spite of minor problems I love the boat and I'd still love it even if I had to lick the water off the deck!
