460 starter problem

I have a 460 and have been having problems with the starter. I have a keyless engine panel mounted on the console with a start switch. Although once in a while flipping the switch will turn over the starter on the first press, more often I end up hitting the switch several times before the starter turns over. I usually hear the solinoid click each time I throw the switch though. Anyone else have a similar problem that they have resolved? The starter is located most inconveniently so that is the last thing I want to have to diagnose or replace.

Dave, check the archives.

I recall a thread describing this same problem, but not with a 460. It involved a voltage drop and the solution was a relay or solenoid. Good luck. RD

me too with original starter

My 460 was delivered with a defective starter. It would start sometimes and sometimes not. I understand that the starter has to be aligned in order for it to work. IF it does not line itself up, some mechanics hit it with a hammer to see if they can make it turn a little and then start. It was so bad that they had to change the stater. Good luck. Check all connections

I had a similar problem with the starter on our H34, not just a while, but for years! Long story cut to the chase, check the GROUND cable where it attaches to the engine block. I just cleaned mine, and everything is fine now, used to have to switch to all batteries, and starter just clicked, now itis running before I can relelease the button! Good luck!

Working on the boat this weekend

I'll give a look at the connections and try to see if I can get to the starter / solenoid this weekend too. Next weekend heading to San Juan Islands (along with the rest of the population of Western Washington), and I'd prefere to not having a slow starting engine while traveling in new waters. Thanks.
